Why are Some USB Ports Orange?

6/12/2025

An orange USB port isn’t just a quirky design choice—it’s a hidden clue about power and speed.

🔌 The Color Code Behind Your Ports

If you’ve ever wondered why some USB ports are black, blue, red, yellow, or even orange, the answer is simple: color often signals capability. While black usually means older USB 2.0, and blue or teal indicates faster USB 3.0 or later, orange is part of a family of high-power ports designed for convenience.

Picture
⚡ What Orange Really Means

An orange USB port typically supports “Sleep-and-Charge” functionality, allowing you to charge devices like phones or tablets even when your computer is asleep or shut down. It often delivers USB 3.0 speeds of up to 5 Gbps, though in some cases it may be designated as charging-only. In short, it’s a port built for reliability when you need power without booting up your PC.

🧩 Not a Universal Standard

Here’s the catch: USB colors aren’t officially standardized. The USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) doesn’t enforce color coding, leaving manufacturers to adopt their own conventions. That means an orange port on one laptop might behave slightly differently on another. The safest bet? Check your device manual or test the port yourself—plug in a phone while the computer is off to see if it charges, or transfer a large file to gauge speed.

🎮 Why It Matters for Everyday Users

Understanding these color cues can help you optimize your setup:

  • Gamers can plug keyboards and mice into low-latency ports.
  • Creators can use high-speed ports for transferring large video files.
  • Everyday users can make smarter choices about where to charge devices.

📌 The Takeaway

An orange USB port is more than a splash of color—it’s a signal of extra power and convenience. As devices evolve, learning to decode these subtle differences can make your tech life smoother, faster, and more efficient.

Bottom line: Next time you spot an orange USB port, think of it as your PC’s “always-on” lifeline—ready to keep your devices powered, even when the computer takes a break.

Phone at the Table

6/12/2025

How can I find a harmonious balance of having dinner with family and friends and not their phones?

Ahh the ‘ol Phone-MO. You can ban them, but that’s really too draconian these days.

How about Park and Share?

Picture

This approach respects the need for people to check their devices while setting clear boundaries that prioritize in-person connection.

1. The Core Rule: Phones are "Parked"

  • Upside Down & Silent: Phones must be placed on the table upside down or in a designated basket/area and switched to silent (vibrate off). This prevents the visual distraction of notifications and the impulse to constantly check the screen.
  • Presence is Priority: Everyone agrees that conversation is the first priority. No one picks up their phone during a course or while another person is speaking.

2. Designated "Share Time" Breaks

By scheduling a specific time for phone use, you transform the compulsive check-in into a shared, intentional activity. This directly addresses the "Fear of Missing Out" (FOMO).

  • After Appetizers/Between Courses: This is a natural break point. Allow a 2- to 3-minute "Screen Break." Everyone can check for important texts/emails and quickly catch up.
  • The "Show and Tell" at Dessert: Once the main conversation begins to wind down, the phone becomes a tool for connection. Encourage guests to use the last 10–15 minutes (or the time while waiting for dessert/coffee) to share something interesting they found:
    • "I saw this amazing photo from my trip—let me show you!"
    • "We were just talking about that movie; I’ll pull up the trailer."
    • "Check out this hilarious meme/article that is exactly what we were discussing."

This method teaches people to use their phones as a supplement to the experience rather than a shield against it. It keeps the core meal device-free and engaging while validating the reality of modern connectivity.

My TV Wants to Control My Lights

24/9/2025

Yep, Google TV now offers a "Home Panel" feature that turns your TV into a central control hub for your smart home devices. This allows you to manage all smart things from the comfort of your lounge chair using your voice or TV remote.

Picture

How It Works

  • Integration with Google Home: The feature works by syncing with your Google Home app. Any smart devices you've set up in the app—and added to your "Favorites"—will automatically appear on your Google TV Home Panel.
  • Easy Access: You can access the Home Panel by using the quick settings dashboard on your Google TV or by long-pressing the home button on your remote.
  • Direct Control: Once in the Home Panel, you can quickly turn devices on or off, adjust settings like light brightness, and even view live feeds from compatible security cameras and video doorbells.
  • Voice Commands: You can also use voice commands through the Google Assistant on your remote to control your devices without having to navigate menus. For example, you can say, "Hey Google, dim the living room lights" or "Show me the front door camera."

So basically, you don’t need a Google Nest device if your TV is on 😂

My Phone Didn’t Ring

20/6/2025

A bit of an air crash investigation:

We've all been there: staring at our phone, willing it to ring for that crucial call – from a job offer to urgent family news – only to be met with a frustrating "missed call" notification, despite no audible ring. That sinking feeling is all too familiar. But why does this happen? Is your phone secretly betraying you? We delve into the complex world of mobile calls to uncover the culprits and offer some potential solutions.
Picture

How does it all work?

If your phone and the caller’s phone are connected to the phone network via 4G or 5G, then your phone will receive an “invite” from the caller and it should ring.

Why would it not ring?

  • 4G and 5G networks are slightly different. The system tries to use the fastest system then falls back to slower systems if there’s a connection problem, so 5G to 4G to 3G (now gone) to voicemail…
  • Sometimes your phone might not be registered on the network correctly so might not receive the call invite. Maybe a SIM error or software glitch,
  • Network Handover problems can happen when moving between towers.
  • Battery saver settings might cause a problem.
  • You might be in a dead zone or have poor reception.

I Have a New Mac

7/6/2025

If you’re a Mac user and you want to upgrade to a new iMac or MacBook, you can use several methods to get your data across and basically pick up where you left off and keep working.

The easiest method is to use Migration Assistant.

Transfer to a new Mac with Migration Assistant

Use Migration Assistant to copy some or all of your content from one Mac to another Mac.

What does Migration Assistant do?

Migration Assistant transfers documents, apps, user accounts and settings from one Mac to another. It doesn’t delete information from your old Mac or replace the operating system (macOS) on your new Mac.
Picture

Migration Assistant can also transfer from a Time Machine backup or transfer from a Windows PC.

  • Connect both old and new devices to the same WiFi.
  • Run Migration assistant on the Old
  • Go through the setup process on your new and tell it to get data from your old Mac device.
  • Create a new User Account and password and hit go

This may take some time depending on how much data you need to transfer.

Split Screen on Mac OS

29/5/2025

It’s actually really quick to do.

In your open Window hover (top left) and you will see 3 buttons for Close, Minimise and Resize (Red, Orange and Green).

It’s all about the Green button.

On older Macs HOLD down the green button and then you can select which half of the screen to move the window to. You then select the second window to tile it to the opposite side.

Picture

On newer Macs HOVERover the green button and you will see dedicated menu options (Tile, Slip to Left, Spit to Right)

My phone gets hot

23/12/2024

There are many contributing factors to phone temperature.

  • Charging speed
  • Screen on time (timeout) and brightness
  • Long sessions in various apps (gaming, videos)
  • Background processes
  • Type of case
  • Environment including location in the car (over an air vent is cool 🙂)

It could also be faulty (perhaps the battery).

Which Streaming Stick Should I Buy

18/12/2024

Tossing up Google Streamer, Roku

There are quite a few options in the streaming stick space.

  • Amazon Fire TV Stick HD/4K    $39/$59
  • Google TV Streamer $139
  • Google Chromecast TV HD/4K $59/$79 (old model)
  • Roku 4K $ Has Private listening through phone, Support Airplay and Chromecast
Picture
Both the Roku Express 4K+ and the Google Chromecast with Google TV are excellent streaming devices, but they offer different experiences.

Roku Express 4K+
  • Pros:
    • User-friendly interface
    • Extensive app library
    • Strong performance
    • Voice remote with dedicated buttons
  • Cons:
    • Can be ad-heavy
Google Chromecast with Google TV
  • Pros:
    • Google Assistant integration
    • Sleek design
    • Google TV interface with personalized recommendations
  • Cons:
    • Can be less intuitive for some users
Key Differences:
  • Interface: Roku's interface is simpler and more straightforward, while Google TV offers a more personalized experience with curated recommendations.
  • Remote Control: Roku's voice remote provides dedicated buttons for common functions, while Google TV's remote relies more on voice commands and the Google Assistant.
  • App Selection: Both devices offer a wide range of streaming apps, including popular choices like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime Video.
  • Performance: Both devices offer smooth performance and support 4K HDR streaming.
Ultimately, the best choice for you will depend on your personal preferences. If you prioritize a simple, user-friendly interface and a vast app library, the Roku Express 4K+ is a great option. If you prefer a more integrated Google experience and enjoy personalized recommendations, the Chromecast with Google TV might be a better fit.
Consider these factors when making your decision:
  • User Interface: Which interface do you prefer?
  • Voice Assistant: Do you prefer Roku's voice search or Google Assistant?
  • App Selection: Are there specific apps that you must have?
  • Budget: Both devices offer excellent value for the price, but the Roku Express 4K+ is generally more affordable.

Bypass Charging Phones

18/12/2024

We recently discussed the relatively new concept of bypass charging in phones.

What is Bypass Charging?

Bypass charging is a feature that allows your phone to draw power directly from the charger, bypassing the battery. This can significantly reduce the stress on the battery, leading to improved longevity.

Picture
How Does it Work?

When your phone is plugged in and you enable bypass charging, the power from the charger is directly supplied to the phone's components, bypassing the battery. This reduces the number of charge-discharge cycles, which can accelerate battery degradation.
Well I did some digging and found which phones support this feature:

  • Google Pixel 6 and newer (from the December feature drop)
  • Samsung Galaxy A35 through to S24 series
  • Asus ROG Phone 3 - check out battery care menu
  • Sony Xperia - Heat suppression power control
  • Xiaomi Black Shark 5, Shark Pro
  • Others will pop up in time…

If you’re in the market for a new phone, perhaps consider this feature in your criteria list.

Can I Disable the Google News Feed?

16/12/2024

Every time I swipe right from the home screen accidentally I get the news. Can I turn it off?

Unfortunately, there isn't a direct way to completely disable the swipe-right gesture to access the Google News feed on most Android devices.

This feature is deeply integrated into the Android system, and many manufacturers have adopted it as a standard part of their user interface.

Picture
Try using a different launcher maybe?
  • Simple mode is built in or you can get other from the Play store
  • Search for Launcher. Some good ones include: Niagara and Nova

What happened to my photos on iPhone

14/12/2024

The Apple iOS update 18.2 has made some significant changes to system apps, especially Photos. You may feel like all your photos have moved, gone or you have multiple copies.

Well it’s most likely due to the new interface and the new way things are grouped and sorted. If you scroll down to the bottom of your default photos app screen there is a customise and reorder option button.

You can turn on/off collections as you like and then drag the order around using the hamburgers on the right.

Reset option is there if you lose track of what you are doing.

Checkout the utilities menu for things like duplicates.

Listener Question - No Sound in Headphones in Windows

13/12/2024

When I plug in headphones, the sound still comes out of my speakers.

Windows should ask or automatically set up headphones when you plug them in to an audio port on your PC or laptop.

If not, try the volume control (speaker icon) in the system tray bottom right.
Select sound output on the bottom right hand choose from the options.

Hopefully you will see your headphones.  Note: More settings at the bottom

Keyboard registering double letters

In Windows Settings -> Keyboard you can play with  repeat delay which might help.

If your keyboard is hard wired, it’s likely faulty, so get a new one - they are cheap enough.

If it’s wireless or bluetooth:

  • Move your receiver closer, maybe put it on a usb extension cable
  • Replace the batteries (or charge it up)
  • Check your drivers if there are any updates.

Old Wii new TV

10/12/2024

The amazing Nintendo Wii released in 2006 was connected to your TV using a yellow RCA connector for composite video and the audio was fed using twin RCA audio connectors. Older TV’s had these connections but nowadays, newer sets have done away with these - mainly because they want to save a buck in manufacturing costs and not many external devices use these connectors.
Picture
So, you can buy a premium TV which has these connectors or get a Wii dongle from ebay, Temu, Aliexpress etc… You can get an adapter which plugs into the Wii and has a HDMI connector output which will go into most TVs. Both video and Audio are transmitted through the HDMI plug.

Great cheap option to keep the Wii alive.

Assume no damage, drop, water, heat…

  • Leave it on the charger for 30 mins or so and see if the screen shows anything

My Friend has Gesture Navigation

4/12/2024

How do I enable Gesture Navigation?

What is it?
Navigating between apps on your phone can vary.
The old way has 3 buttons or icons at the bottom of the screen.
Arrow (back) circle (home) square (list apps)

Gesture navigation uses Swipe (left-right) to go back Swipe up (home) Swipe Up and Hold (list apps)

Takes a bit of getting used to but gestures are more efficient.

How to turn it on?
Settings -> system settings -> Navigation Settings (gesture navigation)

There may be some customisation options and other gestures you can turn on so have a bit on an explore in that part of settings.

Incidentally, newer Apple phones use the same gestures.

Listener Question - My Update Disappeared

3/12/2024

I saw a notification for an Android update and tapped on it. Then it disappeared and nothing happened?

In most cases updates are handled in the background as they can be large and take time to download.
You may see a notification (swipe down) showing a download in progress.
Sometimes downloads don’t happen if you’re not on WiFi.
Sometimes updates are paused until after a period of inactivity - maybe overnight.

You should be able to check on the status Settings-> System -> Software Updates
You can also trigger an update from here (if it didn’t start).

Always good to do a phone restart after an update (if it didn’t happen automatically).

Listener Question - Why a scam email with no content?

15/11/2024

I've received a scam email with no links or anything to click on.  Any chance you could phone me if you have a few minutes to discuss why I would get such an email?  I don't think I am in any danger. I'm just curious what benefit a scammer gets from this?
Picture
  • My guess is that the email is a test to see if the address (yours) is valid before sending you other stuff.
  • If a message is successfully received, then it can be tracked using receipt requests that the mailbox is valid.
  • If the user then opens the email, they can assume the mailbox is active and monitored.
Yes. you are 100% correct.  I have received a second email requesting help with a $gift card to assist someone with cancer (who I don't know).  Obviously a scam 🤣.
Is this worth reporting to a (?) government organisation?  If so, who / what would that be?
The scamwatch website has a reporting  mechanism. You can also report a phishing attack on Outlook according to Microsoft. I won't send you the link 🥴, just google "report phishing outlook".
Scammers may send emails with no links or content for several reasons:
  • Testing Email Addresses: They might be checking if your email address is active and valid, to add it to their future spam lists.
  • Harvesting Information: Even without links, they could be using hidden tracking pixels in the email to monitor if you open it, providing them with information about your email activity.
  • Social Engineering Preparation: They might be laying the groundwork for a future scam, sending a seemingly innocuous email to establish a sense of familiarity before launching a more sophisticated attack.
  •  Phishing Attempt: While less common, it's possible they're relying on the sender's name or subject line to trick you into replying or taking other actions that could compromise your security.
Regardless of the reason, it's crucial to exercise caution and never reply to or interact with suspicious emails, even if they seem harmless.

Youtube App vs Browser

11/11/2024

You can access Youtube in a number of ways from your browser of choice or you can install an App on most devices. For example your TV may have a Youtube app which can be installed from an app store - be it Google (Android), Samsung, LG, Sony, etc… Like most apps, there are benefits which are often not available in the browser editions. That said, in some cases the reverse is also true.

Generally, if you can’t install an app, you can always use the browser.

For TVs, you can always explore the option of casting from your phone, tablet, laptop or plugging in a HDMI cable.

I would suggest you try both methods and see which will suit your purposes the best. This can vary depending on what you are trying to achieve.

Should I buy a phone outright?

25/10/2024

What’s the real difference?
  • Outright (retailer) full amount up front (layby, finance options also avail)
  • Plan (telco) bundles the phone with a plan on a contract (postpaid usually) over 12, 24 or 36 months.
  • Sim only plan if you have a phone and just want a new or better plan.

Picture
Which is cheaper?
  • Outright, by a narrow margin if at all.
  • Plans are usually interest free over the period but you are locked into the contract (for the device) with early exit fees.
  • The call plan is generally month to month so you can change plans with the same provider easily during the contract period.
  • You should consider insurance for breakage as you are stuck with the phone for the contract period.
  • Check your credit card qualifies for zero interest as there may be fees for some providers.

Biggest Pro for Outright
Better phone choice

Biggest Pro for Plan
No upfront cost

What is Incognito Mode?

25/10/2024

Browsing in Incognito mode means your activity data isn’t saved on your device, or to a Google Account you’re not signed into.

For example, you may use Incognito mode to shop online for a birthday gift for a family member who shares your device. If you don’t sign in to your Google account, your shopping activity will not appear in your Chrome browsing activity and won’t be saved to your Google Account.

Each time you close all Incognito windows, Chrome discards any site data and cookies associated with that browsing session.

Chrome doesn’t tell websites, including Google, when you're browsing privately in Incognito mode.
Picture
So: Chrome won’t save the following information:
Your browsing history
Cookies and site data
Information entered in forms

However: Your activity might still be visible to:
Websites you visit
Your employer or school
Your internet service provider

Note: Block third-party cookies
When on, sites can't use cookies that track you across the web. Features on some sites may break.
