Apple Intelligence Requirements

15/1/2025

So, does your iPhone support these features? Apple Intelligence is available on devices running iOS 18.1 or later, but there's a catch. You'll need one of the following iPhones:

  • iPhone 15 Pro
  • iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 16 models (and presumably future models)
Picture
These models have the necessary processing power, thanks to their advanced chips, to handle the on-device AI processing that Apple Intelligence requires. If you have an older iPhone, unfortunately, you won't be able to access these new features.

When Apple Intelligence first launched, it required about 4 gigabytes of free storage on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac. But with the recent iOS 18.2 update, that requirement has nearly doubled to 7 gigabytes per device.

This increase is due to the addition of several new AI-powered features, including Genmoji, ChatGPT integration with Siri, Image Playground, and more. Because Apple Intelligence processes much of its data directly on your device for privacy reasons, these features require downloading AI models, which take up space.

The impact is even greater if you use Apple Intelligence across multiple devices. Using the AI features on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac will now consume a total of 21 gigabytes of your storage. And there's currently no way to reduce this by disabling individual features. Experts predict this storage demand will only continue to grow with future updates, potentially reaching 10 gigabytes per device in the coming months. So, if you're planning to buy a new Apple device, you might want to consider opting for a higher storage tier to accommodate these growing AI demands.

AI Powered Birth Control for Pigeons

12/12/2024

A bit like the 1963 movie “The Birds”, Geraldton residents have been grappling with a growing pigeon population, leading to concerns about property damage and public health.

To combat this issue, the City of Greater Geraldton has implemented a new approach involving artificial intelligence (AI) and birth control.

The problem has been exacerbated by the abundance of spilled grain in the area, providing an ideal breeding ground for pigeons. In response, the council has partnered with CBH and Midwest Ports to launch a comprehensive pigeon control program.
Picture
A High-Tech Solution
A key component of this program is the use of OvoControl, a birth control method that reduces the fertility of pigeons. This non-lethal approach helps control the population without harming the birds or other wildlife.
The key advantage of OvoControl is its specificity. It targets pigeons and poses no harm to other birds or animals. This makes it a more environmentally friendly solution compared to traditional methods like trapping or poisoning.
To implement OvoControl, specially designed feeders are used to distribute the birth control medication. These feeders are often monitored by AI-powered cameras to ensure that only pigeons are accessing the medication.

Simple Home Remedies
If you have a local pigeon infestation on your properties, there are several recommendations for low-tech solutions:
  • Hostile Environment: Using deterrents like netting, spikes, or reflective materials can make rooftops and ledges less attractive to pigeons.
  • Regular Cleaning: Removing nests and droppings can discourage pigeons from returning.
  • Predatory Presence: A pet cat can help deter pigeons from your property.

By combining technology and traditional methods, Geraldton is working towards a more harmonious coexistence with its feathered friends.

"Noise-Cancelling Robots" Aim to Quiet Noisy Cafes

17/10/2024

Imagine having the power to silence a noisy table right next to you in a bustling café. While this might sound like science fiction, a group of researchers is working to make it a reality.

The Breakthrough: Researchers at the University of Washington have developed an inventive solution using "shape-changing speakers" to create localised quiet zones within crowded spaces like cafes.

Picture
How it Works: This cutting-edge technology employs self-deploying microphones to divide rooms or areas into speech zones and track the positions of individual speakers. Similar to the principle behind noise-cancelling headphones, tiny robotic microphones placed near loud individuals emit sound waves with an opposite phase (known as "anti-noise") to effectively neutralise or cancel out the noise.

Robotic "Acoustic Swarm": The system includes a fleet of robots equipped with advanced deep-learning algorithms for sound analysis and voice differentiation. These robots can autonomously navigate, analyse the surrounding environment, and distinguish between different sounds and speakers. When a loud conversation occurs at one table, the robot stationed there can reduce the volume of that specific conversation while allowing other discussions to continue uninterrupted.

Enhanced Control and Applications: This system has the potential to replace a central microphone in settings like conference rooms, providing more precise control over in-room audio. It can also continuously monitor noise levels and adjust the position and activity of the robotic swarm to maintain a quieter environment in places like cafes.

Revolutionary Potential: This has the potential to revolutionise how we manage noise in shared spaces, offering a unique solution to the age-old problem of disruptive conversations.

Ongoing Testing: The robotic prototype is currently undergoing testing in various indoor spaces, including workplaces and living rooms, with promising results in isolating and managing different sounds and conversations.

Real-World Applications: Researchers are also exploring the possibility of creating real-world mute and active zones, where people in different parts of a room can hear different audio, further enhancing its practical applications.

Published in the journal Nature Communications, marking a significant step toward more peaceful and controlled shared spaces in the future.

The AI Race: Detection vs. Deception

OpenAI's announcement of a new AI detection tool has ignited a fresh chapter in the ongoing battle between AI creators and those seeking to detect its output. While the 99.9% accuracy rate is impressive, it's essential to approach this technology with a critical eye.
Picture
How Does It Work?
OpenAI's method involves watermarking AI-generated text, leaving a subtle digital signature that can be identified by their detection tool. However, this approach is not foolproof. Adversaries can potentially circumvent the watermark through techniques like translation or paraphrasing.

The Limitations of Detection
The evolving nature of AI models means that detection tools will need constant updates to stay effective. As AI becomes more sophisticated, it's likely that new methods of evasion will emerge. Moreover, relying solely on detection tools to maintain academic integrity might not be sufficient.

A Broader Approach
To truly address the challenges posed by AI-generated content, a multifaceted approach is necessary. This includes:
  • Education: Teaching students about the ethical implications of AI and how to use it responsibly.
  • Human Evaluation: Incorporating human judgement to assess the quality and originality of work.
  • Collaboration: Fostering collaboration between educators, technologists, and policymakers to develop effective strategies.

While AI detection tools can play a role in maintaining academic integrity, they should not be seen as a silver bullet. A combination of human judgement and technological safeguards is essential to navigate the complexities of the AI era.

Do you think AI detection tools will ultimately be effective in preventing academic dishonesty?

AI for Jokes

12/7/2024

Remember that time you thought a robot vacuum was the pinnacle of artificial intelligence? Well, move over Roomba, because AI is now taking aim at your funny bone. A new study by the University of Southern California (USC) has shown that an AI program called ChatGPT can actually write jokes – and people find them hilarious!
Picture
Putting the "Haha" in AI
The researchers tasked ChatGPT with a series of comedic challenges, including:
  • Generating funny acronyms (think they came up with a side-splitting meaning for "STD"?)
  • Filling in the blanks with humour (e.g., "A lesser talked about room in the White House: The Sock Drawer of Lost Dreams")
  • Roasting like a pro (imagine an AI playfully dissing your singing voice)
The results? Shockingly funny! ChatGPT's jokes not only tickled the funny bone of everyday people, but also went toe-to-toe with satirical headlines from the famous humour publication The Onion. In fact, one of the funniest headlines ("Local Man Discovers New Emotion, Still Can't Describe It Properly") was actually written by ChatGPT!
So, Will Robots Take Over Comedy Clubs?
Hold on to your laughter tracks, because human comedians probably aren't in immediate danger. While AI can churn out jokes, it still lacks the human touch – the timing, delivery, and emotional connection that make a joke truly land.
The study also raises a fascinating question: Does AI need to "feel" funny to make us laugh? The researchers believe not – ChatGPT might not understand emotions, but it can analyse patterns and formulas that make something humorous.
The Future of Funny
This research opens doors to a future where AI might write jokes for comedians, scripts for sitcoms, or even create personalised humour for each individual. One thing's for sure: the world of comedy is about to get a whole lot more interesting (and maybe a little bit robotic).
Lets try:

Give me a quick joke about solar power vs nuclear power
Chat-GPT
Why did the solar panel break up with the nuclear reactor?
Because it couldn't handle the constant splitting!
A solar panel and a nuclear reactor walk into a bar. The bartender says, "What can I get you?" The solar panel replies, "Something light," and the reactor says, "Something with a bit of a reaction!"
Gemini
A solar panel and a nuclear reactor are having drinks at a bar. The solar panel boasts, "I can light up the whole town, emission-free!"
The nuclear reactor chuckles. "That's cute. I can power the town for decades, even if there's a little shade thrown my way."
A cloud floats by, casting a shadow over the solar panel. It sighs, "Well, this conversation just got a little dim."

Aussie Voices Under Threat? AI Infiltrates Voice Acting Industry
The Australian voice acting industry is facing a potential shakeup as artificial intelligence (AI) makes inroads. The Australian Association of Voice Actors (AAVA) raised concerns before a Parliamentary committee, stating that AI voice clones could displace up to 5,000 voice actors.
Picture
AI on the Airwaves? Radio Network Considers Replacing Voiceovers
The AAVA highlighted a particularly alarming instance - a radio network contemplating replacing human voice overs with AI-generated voices entirely. This potential shift exemplifies the growing threat AI poses to the livelihoods of voice actors.
Beyond Radio: Audiobooks Bear the Brunt
AAVA President Simon Kennedy identifies audiobooks as the "frontline" for AI incursion. The sheer volume of audiobook content and the perceived cost-effectiveness of AI make it an attractive option for production companies.
AI's Expanding Vocal Range
The impact of AI extends beyond audiobooks and radio. Here are some other areas where AI voices are making their presence felt:
  • Commercials: AI-generated voices can be used to create targeted advertisements in various languages and accents.
  • Customer Service: AI voices are increasingly used in chatbots and virtual assistants, mimicking human interaction for customer service applications.
  • Video Games: AI can create dynamic and responsive voices for in-game characters.
The Human Touch vs. The AI Alternative
While AI offers undeniable efficiency and cost-saving potential, concerns remain about its ability to replicate the emotional nuance and human connection that experienced voice actors bring to their craft.
The Future of Voice Acting: A Human-AI Collaboration?
The rise of AI shouldn't necessarily signal the end of voice acting jobs. Cue the broken record: perhaps the future lies in a sensible collaborative approach where AI handles the more mundane tasks, while human actors bring their artistry and emotional intelligence to the forefront.
The AAVA's concerns highlight the need for a balanced approach. AI innovation can coexist with the irreplaceable talent of human voice actors, but ensuring a fair and sustainable future for both within the industry requires careful consideration.

Is AI Stealing Your Music? Record Labels Sue AI Music Makers for Copyright Infringement. Can AI create original hits, or is it just a copycat? This lawsuit has the music industry singing the blues. Learn more about the fight for the soul of music in the age of artificial intelligence.

Picture
Major Record Labels Sue AI Music Makers for Copyright Infringement
The music industry is clashing with artificial intelligence (AI) music generators in a battle over copyright. Big names like Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Records are suing Suno and Udio, two leading AI music companies, alleging they create music by illegally copying the works of real artists.
The Accusation: Stealing Songs on a Massive Scale
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), representing major record labels, accuses Suno and Udio of using copyrighted material "en masse" to train their AI models. This training data allows the AI to generate new songs that mimic the styles of established artists. The labels claim this is a blatant violation of copyright and are seeking damages up to $150,000 per song.
AI Companies Defend Themselves
Suno and Udio deny the accusations. Suno says their technology creates entirely new music and doesn't copy existing works. Udio makes similar claims, stating their training data is confidential. Both companies emphasise their focus on originality and claim the lawsuits are an attempt to stifle innovation.
Examples of AI Mimicry
The lawsuits cite specific examples of AI-generated music that sound suspiciously familiar. One Suno song, titled "Deep down in Louisiana close to New Orle," is said to mimic the lyrics and style of Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode." Another, "Prancing Queen," supposedly borrows heavily from ABBA's "Dancing Queen."
Play sample track for Great Balls of Fire    \\mite-server\incoming
A Growing Conflict
This lawsuit is just the latest chapter in a larger fight between the music industry and AI music companies. Previously, labels sued Anthropic for allowing users to prompt its AI system with copyrighted lyrics. Additionally, artists and labels have publicly criticised platforms like TikTok and YouTube for allowing the spread of AI-generated music.
The Future of AI Music
The legal battle raises questions about the future of AI music. While some see it as a threat to artists' livelihoods, others view it as a powerful tool for creating new and innovative sounds. The outcome of these lawsuits could determine how AI music develops and how copyright is protected in the digital age.

AI Overviews in Google Search

28/5/2024

Google Search is getting a makeover, and it's called AI Overviews. This new feature promises to understand complex queries and provide summaries of the answer, pulling information from various sources. It sounds great in theory - one stop for all your search needs. But is it too good to be true?
Picture
AI Overviews: A TL;DR (too long-didn’t read) for Your Search
Imagine searching for a yoga studio. In the past, you might have searched for "yoga studios near me," "popular yoga studios," and "yoga studio discounts." Now, with AI Overviews, you can ask for all three at once. The overview will summarise the info, potentially including popular studios in your area, their commute times, and any discounts they offer.
This "generative AI" aims to make search results more visual and interactive. Think images, videos, and a more social search experience.
Are the Answers Actually Right?
Here's the catch: AI Overviews are making some big mistakes. While it can answer basic questions accurately, reports show it has provided incorrect information about everything from running with scissors to dogs playing on the oval during a footy match.
During the Google I/O presentation, there were some absolute clunkers - right out there warts and all for the world to see first hand that Google has a way to go.

  1. How to keep cheese on pizza? Add an eighth of a cup of nontoxic glue. That's a tip that originated from an 11-year-old comment on Reddit.

  1. In response to a query about daily rock intake for a person, it recommended we eat "at least one small rock per day." That advice, from a story featured in TheOnion.com in 2021.
How AI Gets Confused
So, how does an AI designed to help end up suggesting rock consumption? AI hallucinations stem from a few factors.
  • Flawed Training Data: AI models learn from the data they're fed. If that data includes inaccurate or misleading information, the AI can incorporate those errors into its responses.
  • Algorithmic Errors: The complex algorithms that power AI can sometimes malfunction, leading to nonsensical outputs.
  • Context Misunderstandings: AI might struggle to grasp the nuances of human language and misinterpret the intent behind a query.
It’s basically a "Garbage In, Garbage Out" Problem
Let’s hope Google can take out the garbage, before search as we’ve come to know it - becomes just that!
AI Overview - coming to Google Search soon 🙂

Previously, AI functions often relied on sending information to the cloud for processing, raising privacy concerns. CoPilot Plus PCs, however, boast a dedicated Neural Processing Unit (NPU) capable of a staggering 40 trillion operations per second. This allows AI to run directly on the device, providing features like one-click email replies, enhanced search capabilities, and even anticipating user needs.

The goal… "Empowering every person to be more knowledgeable and more productive", according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. The launch includes new Surface devices – a Surface Laptop and Surface Pro – but the vision extends far beyond Microsoft's own hardware. Major PC brands like HP, Asus, Dell, and Lenovo will also be bringing CoPilot Plus PCs to market.

While AI is the headlining feature, these new machines offer significant improvements across the board. Battery life has been a major focus, with CoPilot Plus PCs delivering up to 22 hours of web browsing – numbers previously only seen in Apple's MacBooks. Microsoft even claims a performance advantage, boasting that CoPilot Plus PCs are 58% faster than a MacBook Air with M3.

However, the true innovation lies in the integration of AI throughout the Windows experience. A new feature called "Recall" allows users to search for anything they've done or seen on their PC, not just files. The NPU essentially acts as a personal digital assistant, remembering what you see on your screen.

Privacy is paramount, with all processing happening on-device and the ability to disable Recall for specific apps or websites. Imagine searching for "blue sports car" and Recall not only showing documents containing those words, but also relevant web pages and photos you've browsed. Using AI, CoPilot Plus PCs can categorise and understand what you see, providing a powerful and personalised search experience.

The launch of CoPilot Plus PCs feels as significant as the introduction of Windows 95, ushering in a new era of intelligent and user-centric computing. These new features, coupled with the hardware advancements, promise to redefine how we interact with our computers. Look out for the launch of new CoPilot Plus PCs from Microsoft and other major brands in the coming months, with HP's HP OmniBook X AI PC and HP EliteBook Ultra AI PC leading the charge on June 18th.

Is surpassing human intelligence the next giant leap for mankind...or AI?  ChatGPT 3.4 & 4 are already scoring higher on IQ tests than most humans, and AI like Gemini envisions schools focused on creativity, not memorization. But before we all become brainiacs with robot tutors, let's consider the potential pitfalls of over-reliance. The crucial question: can we control superintelligent machines before they control us.
Picture
Let me lead with this:
"ChatGPT4 is estimated to have an IQ of around 155. Albert Einstein had an IQ of about 160 and the average human IQ is around 100“
Remember Einstein? His IQ, once considered extraordinary, might soon be average thanks to... AI!  New AI models like ChatGPT4 are scoring higher on IQ tests and completing tasks faster than humans. This begs the question: will traditional intelligence become obsolete?
Let’s explores the mind-bending concept of "superintelligent machines" and their potential impact on our world:
1. IQ Exploding: Imagine everyone having instant access to expert-level knowledge via brain implants! Neural lace and AI systems could boost average IQs to unheard-of levels, making geniuses seem ordinary.
2. Schools Transformed: Rote learning out, creativity and kindness in! Schools might shift focus to skills like imagination and motivation as AI handles the knowledge acquisition.
3. AI Already Winning: Don't underestimate machines! AI models are already surpassing humans in some areas, like reading comprehension, pattern recognition, and even complex social reasoning tasks.
4. The Good, the Bad, and the AI: While AI assistance sounds amazing, over-reliance can be risky. Mistakes due to limited AI capabilities and skills development hampered by delegation are potential downsides.
5. A Glimpse into the Future: Remember Deep Blue beating Kasparov in chess? That was just the beginning! AI models are conquering various fields, showcasing rapid advancements in language, reasoning, and social intelligence.
6. The Big Question: As AI capabilities approach or even surpass human cognition, how will we control and guide these superintelligent systems? This is the crucial question humanity needs to address.
Get ready for a world where the lines between human and machine intelligence blur. This is just the beginning of a fascinating, and potentially mind-bending, journey!
