In the Settings around Screen timeout, there’s an option to leave the screen on while you are looking at the screen. It needs to be enabled.
Android: Screen Attention is a feature on some Google Pixel phones that uses the front-facing camera to detect if you're looking at the screen. This helps to prevent the screen from turning off automatically if you're actively using it. iPhone: iPhones use a similar concept called "Attention Aware" features within Face ID. When Face ID is enabled, the iPhone uses the TrueDepth camera system to detect if you're looking at the screen to dim the display or prevent accidental lock actions. They say no data is sent to the servers even though the camera is active. Before you ask, extra battery usage is negligible as the camera is only active for a fraction of a second at various intervals. Screen brightness is your biggest battery killer.
