USB Port Speeds

We’ve got a great question from Sarah in Subiaco.

SARAH (Voiceover/Read by Host): "Hey MITE Radio! I just bought a new external hard drive to back up my wedding photos, but it’s taking forever—like, five hours! My husband says I’m using the 'slow hole' on my laptop. Is he making that up, or do the different colored USB ports actually matter?"

HOST: Well, Sarah, your hubby is actually spot on! USB ports aren't just colored to look pretty; their colour gives us a bit of a clue.

If you look closely at your laptop, often (but not always) you’ll see those little rectangles are color-coded. Here is the breakdown so you never pick the "slow hole" again:

• The Black Port (USB 2.0): These are the "turtles" of the group. They’re fine for your mouse, keyboard, or printer—things that don't send much data. If you’re backing up photos here, you’ll be waiting all night.
  
• The Blue Port (USB 3.0/3.1): Now we’re moving! Blue means "SuperSpeed." These are up to ten times faster than the black ones. Sarah, if your wedding photos are taking five hours, find a blue port—it’ll likely drop that time down to about 30 minutes.
  
• The Red or Orange Port: These are the "Turbo" ports. Not only are they blazing fast for data, but they often stay powered up even when your laptop is closed. It’s the perfect spot to charge your phone while your computer is in your bag.
  
• The Yellow Port: Usually, this indicates a "High Power" port. It’s designed specifically to fast-charge your devices, even if the computer is asleep.
