Music creators in the US are raising concerns about Spotify's business practices. The National Music Publishers' Association (NMPA) has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), accusing Spotify of manipulating the music royalty system.
Here's the crux of the issue: Spotify recently added audiobooks to all its subscription tiers, justifying a price increase. However, the NMPA argues that this addition is disingenuous – many subscribers weren't interested in audiobooks, and the price hike didn't translate into higher royalties for musicians.
Essentially, the NMPA believes Spotify is using audiobooks as an excuse to raise prices without fairly compensating artists. Spotify, on the other hand, vehemently denies these accusations and maintains it offers consumers a valuable service with audiobooks as an added perk.
