Smart CO Detector

A Wi-Fi smart CO (carbon monoxide) leak detector is a device designed to detect dangerous levels of carbon monoxide gas and alert you remotely via your smartphone or other connected devices. It combines the core functionality of a traditional CO detector with the convenience and connectivity of smart home technology.

Where can you get CO in the home?

Fuel-Burning Appliances:
  • Furnaces and Boilers: Malfunctioning or improperly vented heating systems are a major source of CO.
  • Water Heaters: Gas-powered water heaters can produce CO if they aren't properly maintained or vented.
  • Fireplaces: Both gas and wood-burning fireplaces can release CO if the chimney is blocked or the ventilation is inadequate.
  • Gas Stoves and Ovens: While less common, these appliances can produce CO if they are not properly adjusted or if the burners are not burning completely.
  • Clothes Dryers: Gas dryers can also be a source of CO if they are not properly vented.

Other Sources:
  • Motor Vehicles: Cars, trucks, and other vehicles produce CO in their exhaust. Never run a vehicle inside a garage, even with the garage door open.
  • Portable Generators: Generators should never be used indoors, in garages, or near windows or doors. They produce high levels of CO.
  • Grills: Charcoal and gas grills should only be used outdoors.
  • Wood Stoves and Kerosene Heaters: These can also produce CO if not properly vented or maintained.
  • Tobacco Smoke: While it produces small amounts of CO, it's still a source of exposure.

How They Work:
  • CO Detection: Like traditional CO detectors, these devices use electrochemical sensors to detect the presence of carbon monoxide gas in the air.
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity: They connect to your home's Wi-Fi network, allowing them to send alerts to your smartphone or other devices, even when you're away from home.
  • Smart Alerts: When a dangerous level of CO is detected, the device will sound an audible alarm (like a traditional detector) and send a notification to your phone via a dedicated app.
  • App Functionality: The app usually provides features such as:
    • Real-time CO readings
    • Alarm notifications
    • Device status and battery levels
    • History logs of CO events
    • Remote silencing (in some models)
    • Integration with other smart home systems (in some models)

Key Features and Benefits:
  • Remote Monitoring: Receive alerts on your phone no matter where you are, providing peace of mind even when you're away from home.
  • Early Warning: Detects CO leaks before they reach dangerous levels, giving you time to take action.
  • Convenience: Easy setup and management through a smartphone app.
  • Integration with Smart Home Systems: Some models can integrate with other smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, allowing for voice control and automation.
  • Self-Testing and Battery Monitoring: Many smart CO detectors perform regular self-tests and notify you when the battery is low, ensuring continuous protection.

If you’re in the market to update your smoke alarms, consider a combo smart unit.

You can find combined smoke and CO detectors at most home improvement stores, hardware stores, and online retailers. Popular brands include:
  • Kidde
  • First Alert
  • X-Sense
  • Quell

When choosing a combined detector, look for certifications from reputable organizations like UL (Underwriters Laboratories) to ensure it meets safety standards.
