Samsung is showcasing its 2025 TV lineup at CES, and the big buzzword is "AI." But some of these new AI features are raising eyebrows, with some wondering if they're actually useful or just gimmicks.

Picture

Samsung is calling its suite of AI enhancements "Vision AI." While previous years focused on AI improving picture quality, this year's focus is on convenience. One feature, "Click to Search," can identify people, places, and products on screen, providing real-time information. It's similar to a feature on their phones, but limited to what's on TV, making its usefulness questionable.

Another new feature, "Samsung Food," aims to replicate recipes from TV shows and even lets you order ingredients or delivery directly from your TV. Critics suggest this is something a phone can already do more efficiently.

Samsung's remote control is getting a dedicated "AI" button, promising shopping, content, and discovery recommendations. The exact functionality remains unclear, but it seems like a way to bundle various AI features.

Remember Bixby? Samsung's voice assistant is getting an AI boost, supposedly allowing it to understand more complex, chained commands. There's also a revival of gesture control, but this time, you'll need a Galaxy Watch to wave your hands at the TV.

Two features that do seem promising are AI Karaoke, which uses your phone as a microphone and removes vocals from songs, and AI Live Translate, which can instantly translate subtitles in up to seven languages.

Overall, while some of these AI additions are interesting, it's unclear if they're compelling enough to choose a Samsung TV over another brand. Many of these features seem better suited for phones, and it remains to be seen how useful they'll be in practice. Final judgment will sit with the viewers I guess.

Let’s Talk About Sex

7/1/2025

Picture
Love in the time of robots? A futurist is making headlines with some… interesting… predictions about the future of intimacy. Apparently, 2025 could be the year we start seeing robot companions entering high-end households. Forget the Tesla; the real status symbol will be a robot that can… well, you know.

Dr. Ian Pearson, known for his (sometimes) accurate forecasts, suggests women might be the early adopters of these robotic Romeos. He argues that women already have a technological head start in the intimacy department, thanks to the century-long reign of the vibrator. So, apparently, it's just a small step from there to a fully functional, AI-powered companion. We’re not sure how vibrators and robots are comparable, but we’ll go with it.

Sex Robots: A Niche Market for Now (and Probably for a While):
Despite the predictions of robot lovers flooding the streets, it's important to remember that the market for these "companions" is still “tiny. Current models cost more than a decent used car and probably have less personality. Plus, Dr. Pearson himself has admitted his past predictions about AI haven't always “hit the mark”. So, don't rush out to trade in your partner for a bot just yet.

The Future of Intimacy - A More Gradual Shift (Thank Goodness):

While robot romance might not be taking over anytime soon, Dr. Pearson suggests virtual reality could play a bigger role in future relationships. He predicts a rise in virtual… encounters… by 2030, which sounds like a whole new level of awkward first dates. Imagine trying to explain lag to your virtual partner.

The Final (and Slightly Concerned) Word:

Whether robots become our future lovers or not remains to be seen. This prediction offers a glimpse into how technology could affect our personal lives, but it's important to remember these are just educated guesses. And honestly, we're a little relieved that robot-human relationships probably aren't happening en masse just yet. We still haven’t figured out how to properly load the dishwasher.

Before Microsoft Co-Pilot, there was Air Guardian - the real AI Co-Pilot.
Imagine being on an aeroplane with two pilots – one human, one computer. They share control, but their focus is different. If both observe the same elements, the human pilot remains in command. However, if the human becomes distracted, the computer seamlessly takes over.

Introducing Air-Guardian, a groundbreaking system developed by researchers at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). In a world where modern pilots contend with an influx of information from various screens, especially during critical phases, Air-Guardian acts as a proactive co-pilot, forging a partnership between human and machine centred on attention understanding.

Picture
How?
Air-Guardian employs eye-tracking technology for human attention analysis and "saliency maps" for the neural system. Saliency maps pinpoint where attention is directed within visual data, acting as visual guides that highlight crucial regions within an image. Instead of intervening only during safety breaches like traditional autopilot systems, Air-Guardian identifies early signs of potential risks through these attention markers.

The significance of Air-Guardian extends far beyond aviation. Similar cooperative control mechanisms could find applications in automobiles, drones, and a broader spectrum of robotics.

"Noise-Cancelling Robots" Aim to Quiet Noisy Cafes

17/10/2024

Imagine having the power to silence a noisy table right next to you in a bustling café. While this might sound like science fiction, a group of researchers is working to make it a reality.

The Breakthrough: Researchers at the University of Washington have developed an inventive solution using "shape-changing speakers" to create localised quiet zones within crowded spaces like cafes.

Picture
How it Works: This cutting-edge technology employs self-deploying microphones to divide rooms or areas into speech zones and track the positions of individual speakers. Similar to the principle behind noise-cancelling headphones, tiny robotic microphones placed near loud individuals emit sound waves with an opposite phase (known as "anti-noise") to effectively neutralise or cancel out the noise.

Robotic "Acoustic Swarm": The system includes a fleet of robots equipped with advanced deep-learning algorithms for sound analysis and voice differentiation. These robots can autonomously navigate, analyse the surrounding environment, and distinguish between different sounds and speakers. When a loud conversation occurs at one table, the robot stationed there can reduce the volume of that specific conversation while allowing other discussions to continue uninterrupted.

Enhanced Control and Applications: This system has the potential to replace a central microphone in settings like conference rooms, providing more precise control over in-room audio. It can also continuously monitor noise levels and adjust the position and activity of the robotic swarm to maintain a quieter environment in places like cafes.

Revolutionary Potential: This has the potential to revolutionise how we manage noise in shared spaces, offering a unique solution to the age-old problem of disruptive conversations.

Ongoing Testing: The robotic prototype is currently undergoing testing in various indoor spaces, including workplaces and living rooms, with promising results in isolating and managing different sounds and conversations.

Real-World Applications: Researchers are also exploring the possibility of creating real-world mute and active zones, where people in different parts of a room can hear different audio, further enhancing its practical applications.

Published in the journal Nature Communications, marking a significant step toward more peaceful and controlled shared spaces in the future.

The scenario: You’re at the airport and looking at many digital displays of flights, gates, etc… searching for information relevant to you and your travels.
You check in and select “Parallel Universe”...

An overhead sensor detects your presence and location, using anonymous non-biometric object detection. In other words, the sensor sees you as an object without recognizable features – and without facial recognition. As you move around, the overhead sensor continually shifts your private zone to your current location.

Picture
Delta Air Lines has deployed this high-tech digital screen at Detroit Metropolitan Airport as part of its digital identity experience, aimed at streamlining various travel processes.

The departure board uses non-biometric object detection and "multi-view pixels" to deliver personalised flight information to multiple travellers simultaneously. Travellers can opt-in at a kiosk by scanning their boarding pass or digital identity, creating a private viewing zone at their location. As they move around, a non-biometric overhead sensor continuously adjusts their private zone to their new position, ensuring they always see their personalised content.

Sciences' pixels can send different colours of light in tens of thousands or even millions of directions. This enables multiple people to look at the same pixel and perceive different colours, creating a tailored experience for each viewer. By combining this pixel technology with location tracking and sensors, the content can be targeted in real-time to specific locations, individuals, and objects, effectively following them in three-dimensional space as they move through the airport.

  • Delta Air Lines and Misapplied Sciences introduce the "Parallel Reality" departure board at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Future applications of the technology could exist at stadiums, shopping centres, entertainment venues and more. Retail stores have been working on digital ads that are personalised to each passerby, via their smartphone.

A team of researchers from the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Amherst has developed a groundbreaking biofilm that can generate electricity from perspiration. The biofilm, resembling a bandage, harnesses the energy from sweat evaporation to power wearable devices.

The innovative design capitalises on the process of sweat evaporation by using a biofilm made of bacteria to convert the energy into electricity. This breakthrough technology has been hailed as a significant and previously untapped source of renewable energy. Lead author of the study, Xiaomeng Liu, described it as "totally green energy."

Picture
Unlike conventional manufacturing methods that often produce harmful byproducts and emissions, the biofilm is created naturally by microbes. The team used bacteria previously employed in microbial batteries to create the biofilm. The biofilm, sandwiched between electrodes and a sticky polymer, forms a small square, similar in size to a postage stamp, that can adhere to the wearer's skin.

Derek Lovley, one of the paper's authors, explained that the new approach significantly simplifies the process of generating electricity. By growing the cells in a biofilm and utilising this agglomeration of cells, the energy input is reduced, making the technology more efficient and versatile for various applications.

During tests, the biofilm successfully powered small electronic devices such as LCD screens. The researchers plan to further explore the capabilities of the biofilm by scaling up its size and evaluating its potential to power more complex wearable electronics.

The team's findings were published in the journal Nature, showcasing the immense potential of sweat-powered biofilms to revolutionise the field of wearable electronics and provide a sustainable energy solution for future technologies.

The Transports Research Laboratory (TRL) has set its sights on introducing driverless lorries to UK roads in the near future, unveiling a groundbreaking proposal to enhance efficiency and reduce fuel costs and emissions.

Under the TRL's vision, a convoy system involving up to three lorries would be established, with the lead vehicle assuming control over the acceleration and braking of the two trailing vehicles. While the "slave" lorries would still require a "driver" to steer them, their ability to operate at much closer distances, unlike human-driven vehicles, holds the potential to significantly decrease fuel consumption and emissions.

Picture
This initiative takes self-driving technology beyond individual cars, demonstrating the potential for automated vehicles to revolutionise the freight industry. By leveraging coordinated driving techniques, the TRL aims to optimise transportation logistics, improve fuel efficiency, and contribute to the reduction of carbon emissions.

Several pilot projects involving driverless lorries have been conducted on closed roads and in controlled environments in collaboration between technology companies, logistics providers, and government agencies. These initiatives have helped to test the technology and identify areas for improvement.

While the concept of driverless lorries may raise questions about safety and public acceptance, proponents argue that advancements in autonomous driving technology, combined with rigorous testing and regulations, will ensure the viability and security of these convoy systems.

If successfully implemented, this innovative approach has the potential to reshape the landscape of commercial transportation, unlocking economic and environmental benefits for the UK. The TRL's proposal marks a significant step forward in exploring the practical applications of autonomous vehicles beyond passenger cars.

South Korean researchers have unveiled EveR 6, a humanoid robot designed to conduct orchestras. This innovative creation marks a significant step forward in the intersection of technology and music.

EveR 6, developed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence and robotics capabilities. It can accurately recognize and respond to musical cues, ensuring precise timing and dynamic expression. The robot's sophisticated algorithms allow it to interpret sheet music and adjust its movements to match the tempo and style of the piece being performed.

Picture
"EveR 6," took the stage as the conductor for a mesmerising performance featuring over 60 musicians from the Korean National Orchestra - playing traditional Korean instruments.

During the spectacle held at the National Theater of Korea, EveR 6 flawlessly guided three out of the five compositions performed. The robot showcased its skills by leading both independently and in collaboration with a human master for approximately half an hour. The performance captivated an audience of more than 950 attendees, who filled the theatre to witness this historic moment.

As EveR 6 made its grand entrance from under the stage in an elevator, the robot turned towards the audience, graciously bowing in greeting. The sight prompted an eruption of applause, expressing admiration for the technological feat. The developers of EveR 6 are actively working to enhance the robot's capabilities, aiming to enable it to make gestures that go beyond pre-programmed actions.

Throughout the performance, EveR 6's piercing blue eyes remained fixated on the musicians, nodding in perfect rhythm with the music. Audience members were impressed by the robot's stage debut, praising its synchronisation with the orchestra. However, it is important to note that the robot does not possess real-time listening or improvisation abilities, according to its developers. Basically, EveR 6 is deaf and was simply running pre-programmed routines… obviously this will change as AI is incorporated into the programming.
The development of EveR 6 raises intriguing questions about the future of human-machine collaboration in the arts. Could robots eventually replace human conductors in certain contexts? Or will they simply provide a new and exciting tool for musicians to explore? As technology continues to advance, only time will tell how EveR 6 and other humanoid robots will shape the landscape of classical music.

This is new! The renewable energy sector is poised to create yet another way to harness rays from the sun and provide some more offgrid power.. Enter the photovoltaic fence, a new product developed by Closura, offers a unique and efficient solution for harnessing solar power.
Unlike traditional solar panels that require significant roof space, the photovoltaic fence can be easily installed in any yard, regardless of size or orientation. The fence is composed of solar panels integrated into its design, allowing it to generate clean energy even in limited spaces.

Picture
One of the most appealing features of the photovoltaic fence is its simplicity. It requires no special permits or complex installation procedures. Homeowners can simply install the fence, plug it in, and start generating their own electricity.
The photovoltaic fence is not only environmentally friendly but also economically beneficial. It can generate up to 2 kWc of energy, enough to power various household appliances and significantly reduce electricity bills. By adopting this tech, homeowners can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
They are suggesting direct sunlight is not absolutely necessary to generate electricity as the panels are super sensitive, but I wonder the effect of shade from trees and bushes as they overgrow.
In any case, a pretty cool idea if it works. Everyone needs a fence.
