Google Weather App

10/7/2024

You don't need a separate app to check the weather with Google. It's like a hidden gem within the Google app itself. Here's a quick breakdown:
  • No downloads required: Just use the Google app you already have.
  • Easy access: Type "weather" in the search bar or tap the weather info (if visible) on your home screen.
  • Powered by weather.com: Google taps into the trusted source of weather.com for data.
Access to precipitation, wind and humidity plus an hour by hour update on conditions … AND a 10 day forecast. What else do you need?

So next time you need a quick weather update, skip the app store and simply use the Google app!

Google Play Protect

Ever wonder if your Android phone is harbouring any unwanted guests? Fret no more! Here's a quick and easy guide to running a security scan with Google Play Protect, a built-in feature on your Android device.
What You'll Need:
That's right, you don't need any fancy software or subscriptions! Just your Android device and a valid Google account will do.

Picture
Let's Get Scanning!
  1. Unlock and Open the Play Store: First things first, wake up your device and launch the Google Play Store app.
  2. Find Play Protect: Tap on your profile icon in the top right corner, then select "Play Protect" from the pop-up menu. This will bring you to your device's security hub.
  1. Run the Scan: In the Play Protect window, you'll usually see a message like "No harmful apps found" along with the date of the last scan. To give your device a checkup, simply tap the "Scan" button. Play Protect will then scan all your installed apps for potential security threats.
How Long Does it Take?
The scan time depends on how many apps you have installed, but it shouldn't take long. For most users with a typical number of apps, the scan should be complete within a minute.
Play Protect Takes Action:
If the scan detects any malicious apps, Play Protect will take action to neutralise the threat. Depending on the severity of the risk, Play Protect might disable or even remove the harmful app from your device.
Keeping Your Android Safe
Running regular scans with Play Protect is a simple yet effective way to maintain the security of your Android device. By following these steps, you can ensure your phone or tablet stays protected from harmful apps and keeps your data safe.
Apple has no equivalent as the requirements for an app on the App Store are much more strict than those of Android and SO FAR YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SIDELOAD APPS FROM OTHER SOURCES… until the EU gets its way.

FreeFileSync

FreeFileSync is a free and open-source file synchronisation program that stands out for its robust features and user-friendly interface. Whether you're a tech-savvy individual or a casual user looking to back up important files, FreeFileSync offers a powerful solution for managing your data across multiple devices and locations.
Picture

Here's a breakdown of FreeFileSync's strengths:
  • Versatility: It supports a wide range of file systems and can synchronise files between computers, external drives, and even cloud storage services (a recent addition!). This makes it ideal for various use cases, from backing up your PC to a NAS drive to keeping your work files in sync across multiple computers.
  • Detailed Comparison: FreeFileSync goes beyond simply copying files. It provides a detailed visual comparison of your folders, highlighting differences and allowing you to choose which files to synchronise or exclude. This transparency gives you control over the synchronisation process.
  • Multiple Synchronisation Modes: FreeFileSync offers various synchronisation modes, including two-way synchronisation (changes are reflected in both locations), one-way mirroring (changes in the source are copied to the destination), and custom filters for more granular control.
  • Advanced Features: For power users, FreeFileSync offers a wealth of advanced features like task scheduling, version control, and real-time filters. These features allow for automation and more complex synchronisation scenarios.
  • Cross-Platform Compatibility: FreeFileSync is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, making it a great choice for users with diverse operating systems.
  • Free and Open-Source: Perhaps the biggest perk is the price tag – FreeFileSync is entirely free to use and comes with the added benefit of open-source development, which means a transparent codebase and potentially faster bug fixes.
Are there any drawbacks?
While FreeFileSync is a powerful tool, it might have a slight learning curve for complete beginners compared to some simpler synchronisation programs. Additionally, some advanced features might be overwhelming for casual users.
Overall, FreeFileSync is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a feature-rich and free file synchronisation solution. Its versatility, detailed comparison view, and multiple synchronisation modes make it a compelling option for both basic backups and complex data management tasks.
Here's a quick recommendation chart:
  • Ideal for: Users looking for a powerful and free file synchronisation program with various features.
  • Good for: Backing up data, keeping files in sync across multiple devices, and managing files on different platforms.
Alternatives to consider: If you need a simpler interface, explore options like Microsoft SyncToy (Windows) or ChronoSync (macOS).
