Windows Mail is Shutting Down

18/11/2024

Are you using email on your Windows PC or laptop?  Unless you’ve been using Gmail or some other service, chances are you have been making use of the old Windows Mail Program (little yellow or blue envelope down the bottom). You may have also noted a prompt suggesting you try the new outlook (top right). Well times-a-ticking and you need to think about pulling the pin.

Microsoft has confirmed that the classic Windows Mail, Calendar, and People apps will be discontinued on December 31, 2024. This means that users will be forced to migrate to the new Outlook for Windows, which has received mixed reviews due to its performance and feature set.

Picture
The End of an Era

The decision to sunset the older apps comes as part of Microsoft's ongoing effort to streamline its product offerings. While the company argues that the new Outlook provides a more modern and feature-rich experience, many users have expressed dissatisfaction with its performance and user interface.

What Happens After December 31st?
  • Email and Calendar Access: Users will no longer be able to send or receive emails or access their calendars through the old apps.
  • Data Migration: Users can export their emails, contacts, and calendar events to the new Outlook or other compatible email clients.
  • Forced Upgrade: Microsoft will effectively force users to adopt the new Outlook, regardless of their preferences.

A Less-Than-Ideal Transition
Many users have voiced concerns about the new Outlook's performance and lack of certain features. Some may opt to switch to alternative email clients, such as Thunderbird or Outlook.com, to avoid the forced migration.
As the deadline approaches, it's crucial for Windows users to plan their transition and consider the potential impact of the change.

Listener Question - Why a scam email with no content?

15/11/2024

I've received a scam email with no links or anything to click on.  Any chance you could phone me if you have a few minutes to discuss why I would get such an email?  I don't think I am in any danger. I'm just curious what benefit a scammer gets from this?
Picture
  • My guess is that the email is a test to see if the address (yours) is valid before sending you other stuff.
  • If a message is successfully received, then it can be tracked using receipt requests that the mailbox is valid.
  • If the user then opens the email, they can assume the mailbox is active and monitored.
Yes. you are 100% correct.  I have received a second email requesting help with a $gift card to assist someone with cancer (who I don't know).  Obviously a scam 🤣.
Is this worth reporting to a (?) government organisation?  If so, who / what would that be?
The scamwatch website has a reporting  mechanism. You can also report a phishing attack on Outlook according to Microsoft. I won't send you the link 🥴, just google "report phishing outlook".
Scammers may send emails with no links or content for several reasons:
  • Testing Email Addresses: They might be checking if your email address is active and valid, to add it to their future spam lists.
  • Harvesting Information: Even without links, they could be using hidden tracking pixels in the email to monitor if you open it, providing them with information about your email activity.
  • Social Engineering Preparation: They might be laying the groundwork for a future scam, sending a seemingly innocuous email to establish a sense of familiarity before launching a more sophisticated attack.
  •  Phishing Attempt: While less common, it's possible they're relying on the sender's name or subject line to trick you into replying or taking other actions that could compromise your security.
Regardless of the reason, it's crucial to exercise caution and never reply to or interact with suspicious emails, even if they seem harmless.

Nanorobots: A New Era in Cancer Treatment

Scientists at the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden have developed groundbreaking DNA-based nanorobots that can target and destroy cancer cells with precision.

Picture

These tiny robots, designed using DNA origami, carry a "weapon" that is only activated in the acidic environment of tumours. This targeted approach minimises damage to healthy cells, making it a promising alternative to traditional cancer treatments (which basically kill everything).

Key Points:
  • Precision Targeting: The nanorobots are designed to specifically target cancer cells, reducing harm to healthy tissues.
  • Innovative Technology: DNA origami allows for the creation of complex nanostructures with precise control over their shape and function. (DNA origami is a fascinating technique that allows scientists to manipulate DNA molecules to create custom-designed nanostructures.)
  • Promising Results: Preclinical trials have shown significant reductions in tumour growth in mice.
  • Future Potential: Further research aims to refine the technology and explore its application in various types of cancer.

This breakthrough demonstrates the immense potential of nanotechnology in revolutionising cancer treatment. By developing more sophisticated nanorobots, researchers may be able to develop highly effective and personalised therapies for a wide range of cancers.

Cyber -  Security in the US under Trump

What to Expect from Trump’s Potential Second Term in Cybersecurity

With Donald Trump’s return to the White House, cybersecurity policy in the U.S. may see a significant shift. Experts predict a rollback of many Biden-era regulations, with Trump’s administration prioritising business interests, easing tech regulations, and adopting an aggressive stance against foreign cyber threats.

Picture
Rollback of Cyber Regulations

Under Biden, sectors like railroads, pipelines, and aviation saw new cybersecurity standards aimed at safeguarding critical infrastructure. But Trump’s administration is expected to halt these regulatory efforts, focusing instead on voluntary compliance and reduced oversight. Industry leaders anticipate “no more regulation without congressional approval,” easing pressure on businesses but potentially leaving infrastructure more vulnerable to attacks.

End to Anti-Misinformation and AI Regulation Efforts
Trump is also expected to dismantle government efforts to combat online misinformation, especially around elections, a move aligning with his “free speech policy initiative.” Similarly, Biden’s AI guardrails, aimed at curbing bias and discrimination, are likely to be reversed, prioritising innovation over regulation.

Spyware Export Restrictions Relaxed
Biden imposed restrictions on the spread of commercial spyware due to human rights concerns. Trump’s administration, however, may relax these restrictions, prioritising counterterrorism over digital rights. This could open new markets for spyware firms with close ties to U.S.-aligned nations like Saudi Arabia.

Aggressive Cyber Defense Against Foreign Adversaries
Where Trump’s administration may double down is in offensive cyber tactics against foreign adversaries like China, Russia, and North Korea. Experts foresee expanded U.S. Cyber Command operations and potentially a more aggressive response to cyber threats from hostile nations, with a heightened focus on China.

In essence, a Trump second term is expected to roll back Biden’s regulatory approach in favour of business-friendly policies and intensified actions against foreign cyber threats. This marks a stark shift from Biden’s balanced focus on regulation, corporate accountability, and cybersecurity.

Bricks and Balls

Bricks N Balls: The Ultimate Stress-Relief Simulator!

If you're looking for a game that will make you question the meaning of life while you try to break bricks with balls, then congratulations, you've found it! Bricks N Balls is a game that will make you wonder, "Why am I doing this?" and "Is this really how I want to spend my free time?" But hey, who needs existential crises when you've got bricks to break, right?

Picture
The gameplay is simple: you shoot balls at bricks, and the bricks explode. It's like a digital version of stress relief toys, except you're not squeezing a stress ball; you're hurling balls at bricks. It's the modern way to channel your inner Hulk without actually smashing anything in your house.

But here's the twist: the game makes you feel like a genius mathematician. You'll calculate angles and trajectories like a pro. Pythagoras would be proud! You'll become a master at bouncing balls off walls to hit that one pesky brick in the corner. Who knew geometry would be so handy in real life? Forget algebra; it's all about brick-bouncing now!

Simple you say, ha! No it aint.

So taking the gameplay seriously. You have a bunch of bricks in a maze pattern and you fire balls at whatever angle you choose from the baseline. Each brick has a number telling you how many bricks are in that spot. Your balls bounce off the bricks and around to other bricks and the edges of the play area. If your ball bounces back to the base line though, it doesn’t come back. When your ball run is over, the maze moves one step closer to the baseline (tetris style) and when it touches the base it’s game over.

Bricks N Balls is the game you never knew you needed in your life. It's a quirky, addictive, and surprisingly zen experience. Who knew that breaking bricks could be so oddly satisfying and ridiculously time-consuming? Play at your own risk, and remember: it's not just a game; it's a journey of self-discovery through shattered bricks!

Available for Android, Apple and Windows at the stores.

Online versions available form miniplay, puzzlegame.com and others.

Youtube App vs Browser

11/11/2024

You can access Youtube in a number of ways from your browser of choice or you can install an App on most devices. For example your TV may have a Youtube app which can be installed from an app store - be it Google (Android), Samsung, LG, Sony, etc… Like most apps, there are benefits which are often not available in the browser editions. That said, in some cases the reverse is also true.

Generally, if you can’t install an app, you can always use the browser.

For TVs, you can always explore the option of casting from your phone, tablet, laptop or plugging in a HDMI cable.

I would suggest you try both methods and see which will suit your purposes the best. This can vary depending on what you are trying to achieve.

The Australian War Memorial (AWM) YouTube channel has a playlist dedicated to Last Post Ceremonies.

The Last Post Ceremony is a solemn tribute to those who have served and sacrificed in the Australian Defence Force. It is held daily at 5:00 pm at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra.

The ceremony begins with the Last Post, a bugle call that is played to commemorate the fallen. This is followed by a minute's silence, during which all present are asked to remember the sacrifices of those who have served. The ceremony concludes with the Rouse, another bugle call that signals the end of the silence.

The content of the Last Post Ceremony remains the same from day to day. However, the names of those who are commemorated at the ceremony may vary. The names of those who have died in the line of duty since the previous ceremony are read out, and their families are invited to lay wreaths at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The Last Post Ceremony is a moving and respectful tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for their country. It is a reminder of the importance of remembering their courage and commitment.
