Parallel Reality

14/10/2024

The scenario: You’re at the airport and looking at many digital displays of flights, gates, etc… searching for information relevant to you and your travels.
You check in and select “Parallel Universe”...

An overhead sensor detects your presence and location, using anonymous non-biometric object detection. In other words, the sensor sees you as an object without recognizable features – and without facial recognition. As you move around, the overhead sensor continually shifts your private zone to your current location.

Picture
Delta Air Lines has deployed this high-tech digital screen at Detroit Metropolitan Airport as part of its digital identity experience, aimed at streamlining various travel processes.

The departure board uses non-biometric object detection and "multi-view pixels" to deliver personalised flight information to multiple travellers simultaneously. Travellers can opt-in at a kiosk by scanning their boarding pass or digital identity, creating a private viewing zone at their location. As they move around, a non-biometric overhead sensor continuously adjusts their private zone to their new position, ensuring they always see their personalised content.

Sciences' pixels can send different colours of light in tens of thousands or even millions of directions. This enables multiple people to look at the same pixel and perceive different colours, creating a tailored experience for each viewer. By combining this pixel technology with location tracking and sensors, the content can be targeted in real-time to specific locations, individuals, and objects, effectively following them in three-dimensional space as they move through the airport.

  • Delta Air Lines and Misapplied Sciences introduce the "Parallel Reality" departure board at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

Future applications of the technology could exist at stadiums, shopping centres, entertainment venues and more. Retail stores have been working on digital ads that are personalised to each passerby, via their smartphone.

Your Car is Sharing Your Data

14/10/2024

A new investigation by consumer advocacy group Choice has found that many popular car brands in Australia are collecting and sharing vast amounts of driver and passenger data, ranging from braking patterns and odometer readings to vehicle locations and voice recognition information.

Picture
Choice reviewed the privacy policies of the 10 most popular car brands and discovered that seven of them collect and share sensitive driver data with third parties. As cars become more connected and internet-enabled, they are transforming into "smartphones on wheels," equipped with sensors, microphones, and cameras that record and share data.

Data Harvesting: A Growing ConcernJarni Blakkarly, an investigative reporter for Choice, expressed concerns about how vague many of these privacy policies are. “We found that seven out of ten of those car brands allow tracking of driver data, driving habits, and even the ability to sell that data to third parties,” Blakkarly said.

Three brands were singled out as particularly problematic:
  • Tesla: Collects voice and video data from cameras inside and outside the car and shares this with third parties.
  • Hyundai and Kia: Collect voice recognition data and sell it to AI software training companies.

According to Blakkarly, the average driver likely has no idea this is happening. "Drivers haven’t properly consented to their voices being used to train AI models," he added.

Privacy at RiskTesla’s privacy practices have come under scrutiny, especially after reports surfaced that Tesla employees had shared invasive camera footage of customers in private settings. The privacy policies of other brands, such as Mazda, remain opaque, with unclear terms like "voice consumption data."

Blakkarly highlighted that many privacy policies are written in a deliberately confusing manner, making it hard for consumers to understand exactly what is being collected and shared.

Domestic Abuse and Data SurveillanceThere are growing concerns that connected cars are becoming tools for domestic surveillance. Karen Bentley, CEO of the Women's Service Network, warned that abusive individuals have used anti-theft features in connected cars to track and harass victims, even locating them in high-security refuges. Bentley emphasised the need for greater awareness and training around the privacy risks of connected vehicles.

Legal and Policy ImplicationsWhile this data collection is legal under Australian law, experts argue that privacy regulations need to catch up with the rise of internet-connected devices. The Australian Privacy Act, enacted in 1988, operates on a "notice and consent" model, but it often falls short when it comes to connected vehicles.

Blakkarly and others are calling for reforms, including a “fair and reasonable” test to ensure that data collection is appropriate and transparent. The federal government recently introduced privacy law reforms, but they did not include this crucial test.

Protecting Your DataConsumers can take some steps to protect their privacy. By checking their car app settings, disabling GPS tracking when not in use, and limiting phone connections to infotainment systems, drivers can reduce the amount of data being collected. Websites like Privacy4Cars also offer resources to help users delete data from their vehicles, though Australian-specific models are not always covered.

As data collection in cars becomes ubiquitous, Blakkarly urges consumers to be aware of the risks. "Do your own research and opt out where you can," he advised.
With more connected cars hitting the road, privacy concerns are only set to grow, making it essential for drivers to stay informed and vigilant.

Chatting Drones

11/10/2024

In a bizarre turn of events, the New York City Police Department (NYPD) has unleashed a fleet of chatty drones that serenade the public with audio messages! These drones are not just your regular flying machines; they're now equipped with the power of speech! Can you believe it?

The NYPD recently conducted tests of these quirky audio drones at Hook Creek Park in Queens. Picture this: drones floating in the sky, gossiping with residents about the weather and nearby emergencies. "Hey, folks! Stay inside, it's raining cats and dogs out there!" one drone was heard saying. Another drone tried its luck as a weatherman, but instead of forecasts, it ended up rapping the latest rain stats.
Picture
But the real mystery is why the NYPD is keeping the test results a top-secret! Are the drones plotting a takeover of stand-up comedy clubs, and the police are just trying to keep it under wraps?

One imaginative use of these chatterbox drones is to warn neighbourhoods at risk of flooding or extreme weather. Imagine a drone hovering above your head, saying, "Attention, citizens! Brace yourselves for the ultimate water park experience right at your doorstep! Grab your floaties!"

As expected, the residents were both amused and confused by the unexpected airborne chatterboxes. Some even tried to engage in conversations with the drones, but alas, they could only receive pre-recorded responses like, "I'm sorry, I can't chat right now, busy flying and talking, you know?"

Well, who knows? Maybe soon these drones will be hosting a talk show up there in the sky, discussing the latest gossip and giving traffic updates with a touch of comedy. Until then, keep an ear out for those unexpected announcements from our friendly, flying DJ drones! And remember, laughter is the best medicine… especially when it's delivered by a drone!

Irrigreen, a startup that has just received $15 million in seed funding, is looking to help with that by providing smart watering solutions.

The Irrigreen system lets you accurately trace your watering zones and mark off any areas you don't need watered. This is to precisely cover only the regions of landscaping you want to irrigate. Once you set your zones, each one of the smart sprinkler system's robotic heads essentially prints the exact amount of water needed to cover that area, much like an inkjet printer knows how to distribute ink over paper.
Picture
Picture
According to Irrigreen CEO, Shane Dyer, "Because of the flexibility and elegance of Irrigreen's robotic heads, we democratised the process by enabling anyone to design an efficient irrigation system from the convenience of their computer while also instantly calculating how much water they'll save annually."
If you're thinking your current water consumption can't be that bad, all you have to do is go to the Irrigreen website and enter your address to see how many gallons of water you're currently wasting in your outdoor irrigation, no emails or subscriptions necessary. You'll be able to trace your lawn and set no-go zones. You will also get a quote for what a complete system would cost for your specific needs, whether you'd like to do a DIY installation or hire a pro to do it for you.

Promises of 80% less piping and 87% fewer sprinkler heads.

VR Scent Generator

9/10/2024

Remember those 3D glasses and "smell-o-vision" promises from the early days of home theatre? Well, VR scent generators are trying to bring that olfactory dream to life (minus the cheesy 80s aesthetic). These devices aim to add a whole new dimension to your virtual reality experience – literally. But are they a revolutionary breakthrough, or just a gimmick that will leave you smelling like a skunk after a particularly intense VR game?

Picture
How Do These Smell-Emitting Machines Work?
Think of it like a super-powered air freshener for your VR headset. These devices use a combination of technology and whiffy magic to release scents based on what's happening in your virtual world. So, if you're battling dragons in a fiery cavern, expect a whiff of smoke and sulphur (or maybe just a burning smell). If you're strolling through a virtual meadow, prepare for a waft of fresh-cut grass (or whatever the VR programmers decided to simulate).
Are They Worth the Hype?
Well, that depends on how much you want to smell like a virtual world. Some people swear by these scent generators, claiming it adds a whole new level of immersion. Others argue that the scents are distracting, overpowering, or just plain weird. Plus, let's not forget the potential for some seriously unpleasant smells if the VR programmers get a little carried away with their creativity.
Available as:
Standalone devices: These are self-contained units that can be used with any VR headset.
Add-ons: Some VR headsets have built-in ports for attaching scent generators.
Wearable devices: These devices can be worn on the user's face or head and release scents directly into their nostrils.

Move over Elon - AST SpaceMobile, a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink, has successfully deployed its first batch of BlueBird satellites. These massive satellites, each measuring 700 square feet, are designed to deliver high-speed internet directly to unmodified smartphones on Earth.
Picture
Key Highlights:
  • Satellite Deployment: The company has successfully unfurled its BlueBird satellites in low Earth orbit, a crucial step towards providing global coverage.
  • Partnership with Major Carriers: AST SpaceMobile has partnered with AT&T and Verizon to conduct beta testing of its satellite internet service.
  • Regulatory Approval: The company is awaiting regulatory approval from the FCC to commence commercial operations.
  • Expansion Plans: AST SpaceMobile plans to launch additional BlueBird satellites to expand coverage and capacity.
While the initial deployment is promising, challenges remain, including potential interference with astronomical research and the need for further regulatory approvals. However, AST SpaceMobile's progress brings us closer to a future where seamless global internet connectivity is accessible to everyone.
Must be getting a bit crowded up there - Let’s hope they don’t all crash into each other.

LibriVox is a fantastic resource for free audiobooks. It's a volunteer-driven project where individuals record public domain books and make them available online. While the quality of recordings can vary, LibriVox offers a vast collection of titles across different genres and languages.

Here's why LibriVox is a great option:
  • Free: All audiobooks on LibriVox are available at no cost.
  • Wide Selection: You'll find a diverse range of classic and contemporary literature.
  • Community-Driven: LibriVox relies on volunteers, which means you may encounter different reading styles and accents.
  • Accessible: LibriVox audiobooks can be downloaded or streamed directly from their website.

Volunteers have the freedom to choose the books they want to record. It's important to note that the books available on LibriVox are quite old, as they are in the public domain. LibriVox acknowledges that some of these books may contain outdated language or ideas that could be considered offensive today.

PDFs are a common way of securely sharing documents over the internet usually by email. They are designed to be read only in that you can make annotations, highlights etc… but not change the source document.

You can open PDFs directly in your web browser and there are other readers but the best thing about Adobe is Liquid Mode

Liquid Mode is a revolutionary mobile reading experience powered by Adobe Sensei, Adobe’s artificial intelligence (AI), and machine learning technology. It enhances your PDF layout and adds features on-the-fly to help you easily read documents on your phone and tablet.

To use Liquid Mode, open any file and tap icon from the top tool bar.

It opens the document in Liquid Mode that allows you to:

  • View the document with a running layout that is similar to viewing HTML pages on the web.
  • Zoom images for a better view.
  • View linked outline.
  • Use ‘Back to top’ button for easy browsing.
