Should I buy a phone outright?

25/10/2024

What’s the real difference?
  • Outright (retailer) full amount up front (layby, finance options also avail)
  • Plan (telco) bundles the phone with a plan on a contract (postpaid usually) over 12, 24 or 36 months.
  • Sim only plan if you have a phone and just want a new or better plan.

Picture
Which is cheaper?
  • Outright, by a narrow margin if at all.
  • Plans are usually interest free over the period but you are locked into the contract (for the device) with early exit fees.
  • The call plan is generally month to month so you can change plans with the same provider easily during the contract period.
  • You should consider insurance for breakage as you are stuck with the phone for the contract period.
  • Check your credit card qualifies for zero interest as there may be fees for some providers.

Biggest Pro for Outright
Better phone choice

Biggest Pro for Plan
No upfront cost

1010!

Think - Tetris in a square grid.

If you're a fan of brain-teasers that challenge your strategic thinking while providing a satisfying sense of accomplishment, then 1010! is a game that should find its way onto your smartphone or tablet. This block puzzle game, developed by Gram Games, offers a refreshing take on the classic Tetris-style concept, making it a great choice for both casual gamers and puzzle enthusiasts.

Picture
You're presented with a grid and various-shaped blocks. Your objective is to fill the grid and clear lines by strategically placing these blocks.

It feels even easier than Tetris because you go at your own pace — the blocks aren't falling from the sky at their own frequency. But the toned-down pace is part of the addictive twist of 1010, because if you make a mistake, you cannot blame the game. Only yourself.

It has offline play mode which is missing in a lot of games these days.

Hold onto your socks, folks, because the future of footwear is here, and it's not just stylish; it's a lifesaver! Introducing the B-Shoe - the shoe that's so smart, it could outwit a banana peel!

Picture this: You're strutting down the street, oozing confidence in your standard-looking B-Shoes. Little do you know, these bad boys are not just ordinary footwear; they're your trusty sidekicks in the battle against gravity's wicked pranks.

Picture
The B Shoe has sensors, a microprocessor, and even a rechargeable battery - because hey, saving lives is no small feat! But here's the kicker (pun intended): it knows when you're about to have a "gravity-induced oopsie," and it doesn't stand for it.

Let's break down the genius behind B-Shoe:

1. It's Got Your Back(side): The B-Shoe is so attentive; it knows when you're losing your balance. The moment you're about to take a tumble, it does what any good friend would do - it takes a step back. That's right, it gives you the old "two steps forward, one step back" in reverse!

2. Ultra-Light Awesomeness:
3. Smarter Than Your Average Shoe:
4. Anytime, Anywhere:

So, there you have it, folks - the shoe that's turning balance into a balancing act! B-Shoe might just be the future of footwear, making falls a thing of the past. Whether you're navigating slippery surfaces or simply want an extra layer of protection, B-Shoe is the ultimate footwear companion.

QR Code Payments at the chemist

25/10/2024

Australia's largest retailer, Chemist Warehouse, is set to introduce QR code payments as a new payment option. This move is part of a broader trend towards cashless payments and aims to reduce the costs associated with traditional card transactions.

Picture
Key Points:
  • Cost Savings: QR code payments can help businesses like Chemist Warehouse avoid the high fees associated with card surcharges.
  • Convenience for Customers: Customers can make direct payments from their bank accounts, bypassing intermediaries like Visa and Mastercard.
  • Enhanced Security: QR code payments offer improved security compared to traditional card transactions, thanks to encrypted information.
  • Growing Adoption: QR code payments are becoming increasingly popular in other countries, such as South-East Asia and India.
While QR code payments offer several benefits, there are also some potential drawbacks:
  • Internet Connectivity: QR codes require an internet connection, which may be a limitation in areas with poor coverage.
  • Security Risks: There is a risk of scanning fraudulent QR codes, leading to unauthorised transactions.
  • Consumer Adoption: Some consumers may be hesitant to adopt new payment methods.
Despite these challenges, the adoption of QR code payments is expected to grow in Australia. As more businesses recognize the benefits of this technology, we can anticipate a wider range of retailers offering QR code payments in the near future.

What is Incognito Mode?

25/10/2024

Browsing in Incognito mode means your activity data isn’t saved on your device, or to a Google Account you’re not signed into.

For example, you may use Incognito mode to shop online for a birthday gift for a family member who shares your device. If you don’t sign in to your Google account, your shopping activity will not appear in your Chrome browsing activity and won’t be saved to your Google Account.

Each time you close all Incognito windows, Chrome discards any site data and cookies associated with that browsing session.

Chrome doesn’t tell websites, including Google, when you're browsing privately in Incognito mode.
Picture
So: Chrome won’t save the following information:
Your browsing history
Cookies and site data
Information entered in forms

However: Your activity might still be visible to:
Websites you visit
Your employer or school
Your internet service provider

Pop Up Crosswalks

25/10/2024

So crossing the road in Europe is not like Australia. You take your life into your own hands with every step… but Ah, but in Quebec, we have ze popup crosswalks, where even the streets get a taste of French flair!

So, picture this: you're strolling down a charming Quebecois street, baguette in hand, when suddenly, voilà! A crosswalk appears as if by magic. It's like the crosswalks have decided to take a leisurely stroll themselves.

Picture

These crosswalks are like the chameleons of the road, blending in until they are called to action. You're not just crossing the road; you're crossing into a whole new dimension of pedestrian experience. One moment, you're on the sidewalk, and the next, you're part of a street performance art piece.

As you approach the curb adjacent to a crossing point, the bright yellow crosswalk lines on the road quite literally flip up to block the oncoming traffic and provide a barrier for pedestrians to walk behind… e voila.

Cars must stop, else be slapped in the face by these vertical boomgates. Hopefully there are some sensors in place to determine the most appropriate time to raise the bars.

So, when in Quebec, keep an eye out for these popup crosswalks. They may not follow the rules of the road, but they sure know how to make an entrance that leaves you saying, "C'est magnifique!"

Drug Delivery Drones

25/10/2024

In a bold move resembling something out of science fiction, Amazon has launched a drone delivery service for prescription drugs in the United States, drawing parallels to "Wing" technology (package delivery drones). According to the Associated Press, Amazon customers residing in College Station, Texas, are now eligible to receive their prescription medications via drone, with delivery times as rapid as one hour after placing their order.

Picture
The delivery process involves drones programmed to take off from a secure pharmacy-based delivery centre, traverse to the customer's specified address, descend to a height of approximately four metres, and gently drop a padded package. This approach offers an unprecedented level of convenience in the delivery of vital medications.

While this futuristic endeavour holds immense promise, there are, naturally, concerns about potential challenges and complications in implementing drone deliveries for such sensitive items as prescription drugs. What could possibly go wrong?... quite a lot actually 🙂

MS Office for Free

23/10/2024

Microsoft, recognizing the growing competition from free office suite alternatives, particularly Google Workspace (formerly G Suite), has launched its own suite of free online applications under the banner of "Microsoft 365 Online." This strategic move aims to provide users with accessible productivity tools while maintaining their loyalty within the Microsoft ecosystem.

Picture
Microsoft 365 Online offers a familiar interface and functionality that closely mirrors its desktop counterpart, making it an appealing choice for users accustomed to Microsoft document formats. Unlike some free office suites, such as Google's offering, Microsoft's online suite does not require file conversion, ensuring a seamless experience when working on documents.

One notable advantage is the seamless integration with Microsoft OneDrive, enabling effortless file sharing and collaboration. Users can conveniently access their work by logging in with their Microsoft account, the same credentials used for Windows 10.

While Microsoft 365 Online may lack some advanced features found in the desktop version, it aligns with Google's suite in this regard. However, the introduction of these free online apps expands the options available to users who prioritise compatibility with Microsoft document formats.

To cater to diverse user preferences, Microsoft has provided an Office Online version optimised for Chrome, along with mobile editions tailored for iOS and Android devices. This strategic initiative aims to empower users with flexible, accessible, and productive tools, reinforcing Microsoft's commitment to meeting the evolving demands of the digital workspace.

Computer AI Co-Pilot

23/10/2024

Before Microsoft Co-Pilot, there was Air Guardian - the real AI Co-Pilot.
Imagine being on an aeroplane with two pilots – one human, one computer. They share control, but their focus is different. If both observe the same elements, the human pilot remains in command. However, if the human becomes distracted, the computer seamlessly takes over.

Introducing Air-Guardian, a groundbreaking system developed by researchers at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL). In a world where modern pilots contend with an influx of information from various screens, especially during critical phases, Air-Guardian acts as a proactive co-pilot, forging a partnership between human and machine centred on attention understanding.

Picture
How?
Air-Guardian employs eye-tracking technology for human attention analysis and "saliency maps" for the neural system. Saliency maps pinpoint where attention is directed within visual data, acting as visual guides that highlight crucial regions within an image. Instead of intervening only during safety breaches like traditional autopilot systems, Air-Guardian identifies early signs of potential risks through these attention markers.

The significance of Air-Guardian extends far beyond aviation. Similar cooperative control mechanisms could find applications in automobiles, drones, and a broader spectrum of robotics.

What is a chatbot?

17/10/2024

In simple terms:
Imagine a chatbot as a computer program that can talk to you like a person. It's like having a little robot friend in your phone or on a website. This robot can answer your questions, help you find things, or just chat with you.

Picture
For example, you could ask a chatbot on a website about the weather, and it will tell you if it's going to be sunny or rainy. Or you could talk to a chatbot on your phone to order a pizza, and it will understand what you want and help you get it.

Chatbots are like smart helpers that use computers to have conversations with you and make your life easier!

In technical terms:
A chatbot is a computer program or artificial intelligence (AI) system designed to engage in text or voice-based conversations with humans. Chatbots are often used in various applications to automate tasks, provide information, assist with customer service, or simply engage in casual conversations.

"Noise-Cancelling Robots" Aim to Quiet Noisy Cafes

17/10/2024

Imagine having the power to silence a noisy table right next to you in a bustling café. While this might sound like science fiction, a group of researchers is working to make it a reality.

The Breakthrough: Researchers at the University of Washington have developed an inventive solution using "shape-changing speakers" to create localised quiet zones within crowded spaces like cafes.

Picture
How it Works: This cutting-edge technology employs self-deploying microphones to divide rooms or areas into speech zones and track the positions of individual speakers. Similar to the principle behind noise-cancelling headphones, tiny robotic microphones placed near loud individuals emit sound waves with an opposite phase (known as "anti-noise") to effectively neutralise or cancel out the noise.

Robotic "Acoustic Swarm": The system includes a fleet of robots equipped with advanced deep-learning algorithms for sound analysis and voice differentiation. These robots can autonomously navigate, analyse the surrounding environment, and distinguish between different sounds and speakers. When a loud conversation occurs at one table, the robot stationed there can reduce the volume of that specific conversation while allowing other discussions to continue uninterrupted.

Enhanced Control and Applications: This system has the potential to replace a central microphone in settings like conference rooms, providing more precise control over in-room audio. It can also continuously monitor noise levels and adjust the position and activity of the robotic swarm to maintain a quieter environment in places like cafes.

Revolutionary Potential: This has the potential to revolutionise how we manage noise in shared spaces, offering a unique solution to the age-old problem of disruptive conversations.

Ongoing Testing: The robotic prototype is currently undergoing testing in various indoor spaces, including workplaces and living rooms, with promising results in isolating and managing different sounds and conversations.

Real-World Applications: Researchers are also exploring the possibility of creating real-world mute and active zones, where people in different parts of a room can hear different audio, further enhancing its practical applications.

Published in the journal Nature Communications, marking a significant step toward more peaceful and controlled shared spaces in the future.

Microsoft Pushes Passkey

17/10/2024

Microsoft is leading the charge towards a password-free world with its latest advancements in passkey technology for Windows 11. By partnering with third-party passkey providers and enhancing the user experience, Microsoft aims to make passkeys a seamless and secure alternative to traditional passwords.
Key Features of Microsoft's Passkey Initiative:
  • Third-Party Provider Integration: Users can connect their preferred passkey providers like 1Password or Bitwarden directly to Windows 11.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Microsoft is streamlining the process of creating and using passkeys, making it more intuitive for users.
  • Microsoft Synced Passkeys: Users can easily sync their passkeys across multiple Windows 11 devices using their Microsoft account.
Picture
The transition to a passwordless future is gaining momentum, and Microsoft's commitment to passkey technology is a significant step in that direction. By making passkeys more accessible and user-friendly, Microsoft is paving the way for a more secure and convenient digital experience.
If you need a quick refresher…
Passkeys are a more secure and convenient alternative to traditional passwords. They leverage your device's biometrics or screen lock functionality to authenticate your identity. Here's a breakdown of how they work:
  1. Create a Passkey: When you encounter a website or app that supports passkeys, you'll be prompted to create one. You can use your device's fingerprint, facial recognition, or PIN to verify your identity.
  2. Save the Passkey: The passkey is then securely stored on your device.
  3. Sign In with a Touch or Glance: To sign in to a supported website or app, simply tap your fingerprint reader or use facial recognition. Your device will automatically authenticate your identity using the saved passkey.

Robo trash cop was here - briefly

17/10/2024

Robo-Dog was forced to move over for Robo-Cop in the recent past.

In a bid to enhance security and safety measures, the New York Police Department (NYPD) introduced a futuristic addition to its ranks at the bustling Times Square subway station. This high-tech sentinel, produced by California-based company Knightscope, stood as a novel addition to the city's security apparatus.
Picture
Resembling a larger-than-life version of R2-D2, the beloved droid from the Star Wars franchise, the Knightscope robot had been tasked with patrolling the Times Square subway station, diligently ensuring the well-being of commuters and visitors alike. Some had affectionately likened its appearance to that of a "trash can on wheels."

Well, after a brief time on the beat, robo has been relegated to a window display box overseeing the path he used to walk - albeit not very well apparently.

  • The robot faced challenges such as navigating stairs and interacting effectively with commuters.
  • Human officers were often required to supervise and assist the robot, negating some of its intended benefits.
  • The NYPD's decision to retire the robot reflects the ongoing challenges of integrating advanced technology into public safety operations.

Oh well, better luck next time.

Can you damage your phone using cheap USB cables?

15/10/2024

  • Old or cheap USB  cables can result in slower charging speeds and could risk damaging your device or even fire.
  • Not all cables are created equally. Some are designed to allow higher charge rates and faster data transfer speeds.
  • Watch out for fraying, loose connections, slower charging speeds than previously noted.
  • Charging speeds can vary from 2.5W to 100W.
  • Of course this depends on your charging brick as well.
  • With USB-C you may be tempted to charge your phone from a laptop charger, but the protection circuitry may not function correctly so best to use the recommended charger.
  • Be careful you don’t buy a charge only cable… unless that’s all you need, e.g. bedside table.
