The Real Cost

28/9/2026

We tend to talk about artificial intelligence like it lives entirely in the cloud - a weightless, invisible engine humming along in cyberspace. But every single AI query, image generation, and automated workflow relies on a very heavy, very physical anchor down here in the real world: massive amounts of land, high-voltage power lines, complex cooling systems, and windowless warehouses packed tight with servers.

Just like consumer advocate Erin Brockovich’s crowdsourced mapping project is exposing in the United States, the rapid, aggressive expansion of AI infrastructure is bringing these realities right to our own backyard. And as local communities begin to feel the pinch, governments are finally stepping in to set some ground rules.

The Local Pressure Points: Power and Water
Australia’s digital infrastructure footprint is scaling up fast, with national data centre capacity climbing to support heavy AI workloads. But that growth comes with massive resource costs:
  • The Energy Crunch: Hyperscale data centres demand round-the-clock electricity, raising legitimate concerns about grid stability and whether everyday households will end up footing the bill through rising power prices.
  • The Water Security Puzzle: Cooling thousands of hard-working server racks requires staggering volumes of water. In a dry climate like Australia's, balancing these cooling demands against local water security is becoming a major point of friction.

What is the Government Doing About It?
Recognising that local communities and national grids cannot simply absorb this shock without planning, federal and state leaders have moved to tackle the issue head-on.

The National Cabinet backed a landmark framework aimed at creating a single, nationally consistent rulebook for large-scale digital infrastructure. Under this policy push, the federal government is laying the groundwork to introduce mandatory national standards for data centre energy, water, and land-use.
Key pillars of this regulatory approach include:
  • The "Net Generator" and Cost Principle: Signals suggest operators of large facilities will be expected to help underwrite new power supplies - effectively adding clean energy to the grid rather than just draining it - and cover their fair share of connection and transmission costs so household bills aren't impacted.
  • Stricter Resource Transparency: Pushing for better water efficiency and clear reporting standards so local communities aren't kept in the dark when multi-gigawatt facilities are proposed on their doorsteps.
  • Complementary Planning: While the Commonwealth establishes these broad baseline standards, they are designed to sit alongside existing state and territory planning and environmental approval processes, ensuring local councils and residents retain a voice.

The Bottom Line
The artificial intelligence boom isn't just a software race; it’s an infrastructure race. Initiatives like Erin Brockovich's map in the US and Australia's push for a national regulatory framework both point to the same fundamental truth: if the digital world wants to expand its physical footprint, it has to learn to do it transparently and sustainably - without sacrificing the communities footing the bill.

Channel Surfer TV

I think I’ve found something pretty cool that you guys are going to love. If you’re like most people, you spend half an hour staring at streaming menus trying to pick something to watch, and by the end of it, you’re too exhausted to even care?

Well, I stumbled across a site called channelsurfer.tv and it is pretty cool. It’s basically an old-school cable TV guide built out of curated YouTube feeds. Under the hood, it's run as a lightweight web app and it maps out a schedule across about 40 different thematic channels.

The brilliant thing about it is it’s basically a livestream so there’s no rewinding, and no pausing. It runs on a real-time schedule, so if you flick over to a channel and something's already halfway through, you just roll with it. It completely brings back that old habit of channel surfing and stumbling across random, fascinating stuff by accident.

It’s brilliant to have running in the background or just to sit and literally channel surf. Have a squiz at it when you get a minute, it’s well worth a look. Oh and I’m yet to see an ad.

Phone Launchers

Q "Hey team, I keep hearing people talk about 'Android launchers' or 'custom launchers' for smartphones. What actually is a launcher, and is it something I actually need to install, or am I fine sticking with what came on my phone?”

If you’ve ever heard someone talk about an 'Android launcher' and wondered what on earth they meant, think of it as the desktop environment of your smartphone.

It’s the app that controls your home screen, your app drawer, your app icons, and how you swipe between pages. Every Android phone comes with a default launcher pre-installed - like Samsung’s One UI or Google’s Pixel Launcher - which dictates how your phone looks and feels right out of the box.

So, do you actually need a new or different one?

Not necessarily! If you like how your phone looks and handles out of the box, you’re good to go. But if you want to change custom app icons, speed up an older phone, hide clutter, or streamline your home screen so you stop getting distracted by social media, installing a third-party launcher from the Play Store lets you overhaul the entire feel of your phone without buying a new device.

Installation is simple and they are non-destructive so you can switch between them and see what you like.

Fake ABC News Articles

16/9/2026

Picture
If you’re scrolling through Facebook today, you need to keep your guard up. We’re seeing a fresh wave of sophisticated scams targeting Australians by impersonating trusted news outlets- specifically, the ABC.

Scammers are running deceptive advertisements on Facebook that mimic the branding and style of legitimate ABC News articles. These fake pages are designed to trick you into clicking, often leading to malicious sites that aim to harvest your personal data, credit card details, or lure you into fake ‘get-rich-quick’ investment schemes.

It’s part of a larger, ongoing problem. Despite Meta’s efforts to use AI to detect impersonation, these criminals are highly adaptive. They’re using hijacked or purchased verified Facebook profiles to push these ads, making them look deceptively authentic.

The scam starts with a Facebook ad featuring an AI-generated image of well-known celebrities or politicians in a dramatic, on-air confrontation. We are seeing dozens of these, often featuring senior ABC reporters or prominent politicians like Opposition Leader Angus Taylor. One ad might show hackers exposing his bank details on Insiders; another might feature a heated clash with Senator Jacqui Lambie.

But the real trap is what happens when you click. You’re taken to a near-perfect clone of the ABC News website. It’s pixel-perfect—even the ‘iview’ and ‘Listen’ tabs look completely legitimate.

These articles use dramatic, AI-generated prose—describing scenes where 'water glasses shake' on desks—but they mix in genuine facts about these public figures to make the story feel real. The goal? To sell you on a fraudulent investment platform for example: Hexonix 365.

The article will include a fake ‘Editor’s note’ claiming the ABC has investigated and verified the platform. It then uses classic pressure tactics, warning that time is running out to invest. If you follow the link to Hexonix 365, you’ll find polished marketing and fake celebrity testimonials.

Once you enter your details on that site, the phone will start to ring. On the other end is a scammer, ready to talk you into handing over your savings.

But this isn't just a local issue—it’s an industrial-scale operation. The same scam is currently targeting Canada, the UK, and across Europe, managed by a criminal ecosystem spanning Europe and Israel. Globally, this network is estimated to have stolen at least $350 million.

The human cost is heartbreaking. We’ve heard from Australians who have lost over $100,000, and in one extreme case, over $500,0000 - a loss one victim described as having his 'world end as he knew it.'

So, how do you stay safe?
Follow the ‘Stop, Check, Protect’ rule:
  • Stop: Don’t rush. If an ad creates a sense of extreme urgency- like a ‘once in a lifetime’ investment offer- that’s a huge red flag.
  • Check: Before you click, look at the URL in your browser’s address bar. Does it actually say 'abc.net.au'? If the domain looks slightly ‘off’ or generic, do not engage.
  • Protect: Never enter your financial details on a site you reached through a social media ad. If you want to read a news story, go directly to the official news outlet’s website or app.

The ACCC and the National Anti-Scam Centre are working to take down these fake sites, but they can’t catch them all before they hit your feed.

Stay skeptical, stay vigilant, and don't let a ‘sponsored’ post cost you your savings. That’s your cyber update for today - keep your digital footprint clean, and I’ll catch you on the next one.

Huawei MateBook Fold

14/9/2026

Today, we’re sneaking a peek at a device that completely blurs the line between a traditional laptop and a mobile workstation: the Huawei MateBook Fold.

If you’ve been looking for maximum screen real estate without hauling around a massive desktop setup, this baby is genuine innovation. Imagine a single, foldable OLED panel that gives you a massive display when laid flat, but can seamlessly collapse into a standard laptop form factor when you’re on the move.
Picture
What makes this stand out isn't just the 18” folding screen—it’s the versatility of the input. You can use it as a massive touch-enabled tablet, or, if you need to get down to serious work, you can magnetically snap on a slimline keyboard. It’s a perfect example of modular design that adapts to your workflow, not the other way around.

Whether you’re editing spreadsheets, managing dashboards or multiple documents, or just browsing the web, the ability to switch between a full-screen layout and a traditional desktop setup—on the fly—is exactly the kind of hardware flexibility we’re starting to see more of in the high-end mobile market.

It’s sleek, it’s foldable, and it’s a peek at how our mobile workspaces are evolving. Check out one of the many youtube clips to see the different keyboard configurations in action.

That’s your innovation update for today. Keep innovating, and I’ll catch you on the next one!"

Are you tired of cluttered webpages, annoying pop-ups, and endless ads ruining your focus? You’re not alone. Google Chrome’s Reading Mode is the ultimate productivity hack, turning busy, distracting articles into clean, immersive, full-page reading experiences.

Here’s how to use it like a pro:
How to Get Started
  1. Right-Click Anywhere (in a text frame) : Simply right-click on any webpage with text and select "Open in Reading Mode."
  2. The Quick Access Path: If you prefer the menu, just click the three-dot icon (⋮) at the top right of your browser, go to "More tools," and select "Reading mode."
  3. Use the Address Bar: Keep an eye on your address bar! Often, you’ll see a Reading Mode icon appear there when the browser detects a reader-friendly article.

Picture

Pro-Level Customization

Once you’re in Reading Mode, don’t just settle for the default view. You can tailor it to your exact needs using the toolbar at the top:
  • Typography: Change the font style (Sans Serif, Serif, or Mono) to something that’s easier on your eyes.
  • The "Goldilocks" Factor: Adjust your font size, line height, and letter spacing so the text is perfectly sized for your screen.
  • Color Themes: Switch between Light, Dark, or Sepia modes to keep your reading comfortable, whether you're in a bright room or winding down for the night.
  • Focus Control: You can toggle images and links off if you want a strictly text-based experience.

Advanced Productivity Hacks
  • Pin It to Your Toolbar: Use Reading Mode often? Click the Settings icon (the gear) within Reading Mode and select "Pin reading mode." It will then live permanently in your top toolbar for one-click access.
  • Listen While You Read: Need to multitask? Chrome can read the article out loud to you. You can adjust the playback speed, select your preferred voice, and even have the browser highlight the text as it reads along.
  • Synchronized Scrolling: If you want to keep the original page as a reference, use the side panel view. When you highlight text in the Reading Mode panel, the original webpage will automatically scroll to match your place.

Quick Note: Reading Mode is designed for articles and text-heavy pages. If you ever find it isn't working on a specific site, it’s likely because that page features interactive maps, complex image galleries, or login forms that aren't compatible with the simplified view
