What is the importance of capitals when typing usernames, passwords, web addresses, emails, etc…?

Case sensitivity certainly for passwords, but not much else.

Sometimes a webpage URL (Uniform Resource Locator) may be case sensitive, but that’s rare and basically sloppy programming / implementation in my opinion.

EveR 6: A Humanoid Maestro

25/9/2024

South Korean researchers have unveiled EveR 6, a humanoid robot designed to conduct orchestras. This innovative creation marks a significant step forward in the intersection of technology and music.

EveR 6, developed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH), is equipped with advanced artificial intelligence and robotics capabilities. It can accurately recognize and respond to musical cues, ensuring precise timing and dynamic expression. The robot's sophisticated algorithms allow it to interpret sheet music and adjust its movements to match the tempo and style of the piece being performed.

Picture
"EveR 6," took the stage as the conductor for a mesmerising performance featuring over 60 musicians from the Korean National Orchestra - playing traditional Korean instruments.

During the spectacle held at the National Theater of Korea, EveR 6 flawlessly guided three out of the five compositions performed. The robot showcased its skills by leading both independently and in collaboration with a human master for approximately half an hour. The performance captivated an audience of more than 950 attendees, who filled the theatre to witness this historic moment.

As EveR 6 made its grand entrance from under the stage in an elevator, the robot turned towards the audience, graciously bowing in greeting. The sight prompted an eruption of applause, expressing admiration for the technological feat. The developers of EveR 6 are actively working to enhance the robot's capabilities, aiming to enable it to make gestures that go beyond pre-programmed actions.

Throughout the performance, EveR 6's piercing blue eyes remained fixated on the musicians, nodding in perfect rhythm with the music. Audience members were impressed by the robot's stage debut, praising its synchronisation with the orchestra. However, it is important to note that the robot does not possess real-time listening or improvisation abilities, according to its developers. Basically, EveR 6 is deaf and was simply running pre-programmed routines… obviously this will change as AI is incorporated into the programming.
The development of EveR 6 raises intriguing questions about the future of human-machine collaboration in the arts. Could robots eventually replace human conductors in certain contexts? Or will they simply provide a new and exciting tool for musicians to explore? As technology continues to advance, only time will tell how EveR 6 and other humanoid robots will shape the landscape of classical music.

Scamming the Scammers

24/9/2024

Cyber security experts at Macquarie University have developed a quirky solution to combat global phone scams and reduce the staggering $55 billion lost annually to criminals. Using an AI-driven system named Apate, the researchers have created multi-lingual chatbots that engage scam callers in lengthy conversations, effectively wasting their time and resources.

Inspired by a personal encounter with a scammer during a family lunch, Professor Dali Kaafar, Executive Director of Macquarie University's Cyber Security Hub, conceived the idea of automating the process. He realised that by engaging scammers in entertaining conversations, vulnerable individuals could be protected, while also disrupting the scam-calling business model.

Picture
The chatbots, equipped with Natural Language Processing capabilities, engage in believable conversations with scammers, effectively scamming the scammers themselves. With patents pending for this tech, Professor Kaafar and his team are determined to break the profitability of the scam-calling industry.

Phone scams, orchestrated by organised crime groups, often go unpunished, resulting in substantial financial losses for victims. Despite telecommunications providers' efforts to block scam calls, millions of Australians still fall prey to these scams. The rise of voice-over-internet protocol (VOIP) technology enables scammers to mask their location easily, making detection challenging and increasing the risk for victims.

Professor Kaafar explains that scammers rely on a small percentage of successful scams to generate significant profits. By tying up their time and reducing successful scams, the AI chatbots disrupt their business model, making it harder for them to make money.

The development of this technology comes at a crucial time, as the global phone scam trade continues to grow, with Australians alone estimated to have lost over $3.1 billion to scammers in 2022. The approach of using AI chatbots to deceive scammers offers a promising solution to chip away at their profits and protect vulnerable individuals from falling victim to fraudulent schemes.

As patents are finalised and the technology progresses, the potential impact on reducing the profitability of phone scams is immense, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against cybercrime.

Deleting Email on Multiple Devices

21/9/2024

To sync email deletion across multiple devices, you'll need to enable IMAP (or POP3) settings on your email account.

IMAP is generally preferred as it allows you to view and manage your emails from multiple devices without having to download them to each one. Changes made on one device will be reflected on the others.

POP3 downloads emails to your device and marks them as deleted there. However, if you delete an email on one device, it will also be deleted from the server, meaning it won't be available on your other devices.

Picture
Here's a general guide on how to enable IMAP or POP3 settings:

Access your email account settings: Log in to your email account on a web browser. Look for a "Settings," "Options," or "Gear" icon.
Find the "Accounts" or "Mail Settings" section.
Look for options related to IMAP or POP3. You might need to click on "Add Account" or "Manage Accounts."
Enable IMAP or POP3: Select the option that suits your preference. If IMAP is available, it's usually the recommended choice.
Save your changes.
Once you've enabled IMAP or POP3, any changes you make to your emails on one device, such as deleting them, should be reflected on your other devices.

Note: The specific steps may vary slightly depending on your email provider. If you're having trouble, you can consult your email provider's help center or contact their support team for assistance.

Self-Training RoboCat

21/9/2024

DeepMind, the renowned artificial intelligence research lab owned by Google, has revealed a fascinating development in robotics. Their team of over 30 researchers has successfully integrated artificial intelligence with a robot named RoboCat, opening doors to a future world of self-training automatons.

In a paper published on the preprint server arXiv, DeepMind explains that RoboCat employs a virtuous cycle of training. Utilising the same technology found in large language models, the robotic cat can rapidly learn new tasks and enhance its performance by constructing its own performance data.

Picture
Unlike traditional robots programmed for specific tasks, RoboCat's abilities expand as it learns new tasks, thanks to its growing breadth of experience. The robot learns from a dataset of millions of trajectories from both prior tasks and new self-generated data. As its techniques improve, RoboCat transfers its newly acquired skills to other robots, allowing them to build upon those skills.

DeepMind's breakthrough reduces the need for human-supervised training and significantly accelerates robotics research. RoboCat's success rate in tackling previously unlearned tasks increased over time through self-training, with its performance doubling. The robot's ability to learn quickly with just 100 demonstrations is attributed to drawing from a large and diverse dataset.

While this development marks a significant advancement towards creating a general-purpose robot, the question of whether robots will eventually replace human intervention remains open. The 1921 play "R.U.R.: Rossum's Universal Robots" contemplated such possibilities a century ago, envisioning a future where synthetic humanoids replaced human labour.

However, RoboCats present a friendlier outlook, promising advancements in robotics research while emphasising cooperation between humans and machines. As humorist Will Rogers once quipped, "Letting the cat out of the bag is a whole lot easier than putting it back in."

If you want to know more…, refer to the paper titled "RoboCat: A Self-Improving Foundation Agent for Robotic Manipulation"

Xiaomi Dethrones Apple

21/9/2024

Shaking up the smartphone market, Xiaomi has dethroned Apple for the number two spot in global smartphone sales for the first time ever. This news comes according to a report by Android Police, citing industry sources.
For years, the smartphone landscape has been dominated by the rivalry between Samsung and Apple. However, Xiaomi's recent success, particularly in developing markets, has upended this dynamic. The Chinese tech giant has carved a niche for itself by offering a wide range of affordable and feature-packed smartphones.

Picture
Analysts attribute Xiaomi's rise to several factors. Firstly, the company's focus on budget-friendly devices has resonated with consumers in regions like India, Latin America, and Southeast Asia, where economic recovery is underway. These regions prioritise affordability when making phone purchases, and Xiaomi's offerings fit the bill perfectly.
Secondly, the report highlights a slowdown in high-end smartphone innovation in recent years. With flagship phones offering diminishing returns on investment for some consumers, Xiaomi's strong mid-range options have become increasingly attractive.
While Samsung and Apple are likely to remain dominant players in wealthier nations, Xiaomi's success suggests a growing trend. As developing markets continue to flourish, pragmatic buying decisions are expected to favour companies like Xiaomi that prioritise affordability and value.
This shift in the smartphone market landscape signifies a potential turning point. It remains to be seen if Xiaomi can maintain its momentum and solidify its position as a major competitor to the established giants.
You can grab a Xiaomi locally or online.

Solar Electric Fence

20/9/2024

This is new! The renewable energy sector is poised to create yet another way to harness rays from the sun and provide some more offgrid power.. Enter the photovoltaic fence, a new product developed by Closura, offers a unique and efficient solution for harnessing solar power.
Unlike traditional solar panels that require significant roof space, the photovoltaic fence can be easily installed in any yard, regardless of size or orientation. The fence is composed of solar panels integrated into its design, allowing it to generate clean energy even in limited spaces.

Picture
One of the most appealing features of the photovoltaic fence is its simplicity. It requires no special permits or complex installation procedures. Homeowners can simply install the fence, plug it in, and start generating their own electricity.
The photovoltaic fence is not only environmentally friendly but also economically beneficial. It can generate up to 2 kWc of energy, enough to power various household appliances and significantly reduce electricity bills. By adopting this tech, homeowners can contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable future.
They are suggesting direct sunlight is not absolutely necessary to generate electricity as the panels are super sensitive, but I wonder the effect of shade from trees and bushes as they overgrow.
In any case, a pretty cool idea if it works. Everyone needs a fence.

Youtube Ads Going Next Level

19/9/2024

YouTube has been steadily increasing its ad load in recent months, and now the streaming platform has found a new way to annoy users: pause ads.

For non-Premium subscribers, YouTube is now displaying ads alongside paused videos on TVs. Instead of keeping the video fullscreen, the platform shrinks the video and places an ad on the right side of the screen. While the current ads appear to be static images, there's always the potential for more intrusive formats, like video ads, to be introduced in the future.
Picture
Imagine sitting through a 30 sec ad every time you hit pause!
This latest change is yet another attempt by YouTube to push users towards its Premium subscription service, which offers an ad-free experience. While currently only being trialled in select countries, the company hasn't confirmed the rollout of pause ads to all users, it does seem likely though that this feature will become more widespread in the near future.
Reddit is all over it - if you want more info and one user pointed out, the new ad format leaves plenty of room for YouTube to introduce additional ads in the future, further increasing the ad load for non-Premium subscribers. Is it worth $13.99 pm?

You can choose from three different sizes to suit your preferences, whether you're making cocktails, iced tea, or just adding a touch of coolness to your water. (you can already do this - but not remotely or set via an app)
The ice maker is also equipped with smart features that make it easy to control and monitor. You can use the Govee app to remotely start or stop the ice-making process, check the water level, and receive notifications when the ice bin is full. Additionally, the ice maker is compatible with popular voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, allowing you to control it with simple voice commands.
Overall, the Govee smart ice maker is a versatile and convenient appliance that offers a range of features to enhance your home's functionality and comfort.

We’ve talked about Windows Phone Link App before - get it if you haven’t already.

New features allow you to share (send) files from PC to Android in File Manager.

1. Right Click a file and select Share
  • From the popup window select Phone Link and it will send the file over Bluetooth (showing progress).
  • Once completed the file can be found on your device in Downloads -> “Send from my PC”
  • You can move it from there to a more suitable location if you prefer.
