Listener Question - How do I use Google Wallet?

28/8/2024

In Australia, you can only add certain types of cards.
Open the Wallet App and tap + Add to Wallet
Picture

  • Payments (major banks and payment methods) you then use google pay
  • Loyalty (most local stores available)
  • Gift Cards (most local stores available)
…and you can take photos of cards with a barcode (not that great)

  • If you want to add Covid cards, boarding passes and event tickets, you can instigate the load to wallet option from the supplier page - not on your phone.
  • Event tickets received in Gmail can be automatically added

This is changing soon to include an “Everything Else” option and AI powered image integration is currently being trialled in the USA.

New Vinyl Record Tech

28/8/2024

The resurgence of vinyl records has led to a growing demand for efficient and cost-effective production methods. One such technique gaining traction is injection moulding, a process traditionally used in manufacturing plastic products.
Picture
How Injection Molding Works

Unlike conventional pressing, which involves pressing vinyl powder between two heated plates, injection moulding involves injecting molten vinyl into a mould. This process offers several advantages:

  • Faster Production: Injection moulding can produce records more quickly than traditional pressing, reducing manufacturing time and costs.
  • Greater Flexibility: Injection moulding allows for more complex and intricate record designs, including coloured vinyl and unique shapes.
  • Improved Quality: Injection moulding can produce records with more consistent thickness and fewer defects.

So the latest step is to use PET instead of PVC to create an ECO friendly record using injection moulding machines. This is the same tech used to produce CDs, DVDs and Laserdiscs.

But in reality (and according to the audiophiles)the sound is arguably worse.

If you are in the vinyl camp and of the mindset that vinyl sounds better than CD, then listening to injection moulded vinyl may very well be a kind of torture.

Check it out on youtube for a few comparison videos. If you dare 🙂

3D-Printed Polypills:
A Solution to Medication Overload

Let's’ have a brief look at Traditional Pill Manufacturing

The traditional process of pill manufacturing involves several key steps:
Picture
  1. Formulation: The active ingredients of the medication are combined with excipients, which are inactive substances that help give the pill its shape, texture, and release properties.
  2. Granulation: The mixture of active ingredients and excipients is granulated, forming small particles that are easier to compress.
  3. Compression: The granules are compressed into tablets using a tablet press.
  4. Coating: Some pills may be coated with a protective layer to control the release of the medication or improve its appearance.
Packaging: The tablets are packaged into blister packs or bottles.

Got it? OK, so…

As our population ages, the number of medications individuals take daily is on the rise. This phenomenon, known as polypharmacy, can lead to increased risks of overdosing or underdosing using traditional methods of pill manufacture, packaging and distribution. To address this growing challenge, researchers are exploring innovative solutions, such as 3D-printed polypills.

By combining multiple medications into a single pill, 3D printing technology offers the potential to simplify medication regimens and improve patient adherence. This is particularly beneficial for older adults and those living in remote areas who may struggle with managing complex medication schedules.

Beyond simplifying medication, 3D printing also opens up new possibilities for customization. By tailoring the shape, size, and colour of pills, researchers can create more appealing and identifiable medications, especially for children and individuals with visual impairments.

While the technology is still in its early stages, the potential benefits of 3D-printed polypills are significant. As research progresses and regulatory frameworks evolve, we can expect to see this innovative approach making a positive impact on healthcare.

What are your thoughts on the potential benefits and challenges of 3D-printed medications?

What a Load of Garbage

Cleanaway Waste Management, a leading ASX-listed waste management company, has hit the halfway mark in its ambitious $100 million IT and digital transformation initiative, known as CustomerConnect. Launched in 2022, this four-year program aims to overhaul the company’s IT infrastructure, digitise critical processes, and harness the power of data analytics to optimise operations and enhance customer experiences.
Picture
Progress and Achievements

During the recent FY24 results call, CEO and Managing Director Mark Schubert announced that CustomerConnect has completed the first two releases on schedule and within budget. The program is designed to streamline Cleanaway's 'call-to-cash' process—essentially the entire workflow from customer inquiry to payment—enabling greater efficiency and laying the groundwork for advanced analytics and artificial intelligence (AI) initiatives.

Schubert emphasised that the transformation is already delivering value, with the program expected to generate over $5 million in earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) by FY26, and more than double that in FY27. The full completion of CustomerConnect is anticipated by the end of FY26.

What does $25m per year give us and how does this affect (you and I) the ratepayers?

The digital transformation at Cleanaway, including the CustomerConnect initiative and other data-driven projects, has several potential impacts on ratepayers:

1. Improved Service Quality
  • Efficiency Gains: By digitising and automating the 'call-to-cash' process, Cleanaway is streamlining operations, which can lead to more reliable and timely waste management services. This might result in fewer service disruptions and quicker resolution of issues, benefiting ratepayers directly.
  • Enhanced Customer Experience: With the new systems in place, customers (including ratepayers) may experience better communication, easier billing processes, and faster responses to inquiries and complaints. This could make interactions with Cleanaway more convenient and less frustrating.
2. Potential Cost Implications
  • Operational Cost Savings: Cleanaway’s use of data analytics to optimise routes and fleet management could lead to cost savings. In the long term, these savings might be passed on to ratepayers in the form of stable or reduced service fees.
  • Strategic Pricing Adjustments: The company's ability to implement data-driven, differential pricing across its customer base could lead to more precise pricing strategies.
3. Increased Accountability and Transparency
  • Data-Driven Decision Making: As Cleanaway uses data to make informed decisions, there could be greater transparency in how services are priced and managed. Ratepayers might have more access to detailed information on how their fees are calculated and what services they receive, leading to better accountability.
4. Long-Term Benefits
  • Sustainability: By optimising fleet management and other operations, Cleanaway is likely reducing its environmental footprint. Ratepayers might appreciate the environmental benefits of a more efficient waste management system, contributing to broader sustainability goals within their communities.
  • Innovation and Future-Proofing: The adoption of advanced technologies and AI means that Cleanaway is positioning itself to handle future challenges more effectively. This forward-thinking approach could ensure that ratepayers continue to receive high-quality waste management services without major disruptions as technology and industry demands evolve.

Should I Pay for ChatGPT?

ChatGPT Plus vs. Free: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

OpenAI's decision to make GPT-4 capabilities available to free ChatGPT users has significantly changed the landscape for subscribers. While ChatGPT Plus still offers advantages, it's essential to weigh the benefits against the monthly cost.
Picture
Here's a breakdown of when to consider a ChatGPT Plus subscription:

  • Frequent and heavy use: If you regularly push the limits of the free tier's message and image generation caps, a Plus subscription might be worthwhile.
  • Access to advanced features: If you need features like Advanced Voice Mode or priority access to new features, ChatGPT Plus is the way to go.
  • Data analysis and visualisation: The ability to create interactive charts and tables from uploaded data is a powerful tool for businesses and researchers.

For casual users who don't exceed the free tier's limits, a ChatGPT Plus subscription might not be necessary. The free version now offers impressive capabilities, including access to GPT-4, image generation, and web browsing.

Ultimately, the decision to upgrade depends on your specific needs and usage patterns. It's recommended to try out the free version first and assess if the additional features offered by ChatGPT Plus justify the cost.

If you’ve got an old TV and are looking to get a new one because of the smart features - think again.

The smart part of a smart tv is pretty lacking - by and large.
They are usually underpowered and hence slow, clunky and prone to problems.

The worst thing is they generally don’t receive much love in the update department.

This means new streaming services may not make it to your TV.
Picture
A better idea is to grab a streamer and connect it to one of your HDMI ports. This way you save a bunch of money and you get something that can generally be easily updated or even replaced at a minimal cost.

Bottom line: If your TV screen looks good and you’re happy with the quality, do the earth a favour and keep it away from landfill a bit longer.

What streamers are there?

Google Chromecast with Google TV -> soon to be replaced so grab a bargain

Sleep Displacement

21/8/2024

Scrolling through your phone before bed might seem harmless, but it could be affecting your sleep more than you realise. This behaviour, known as sleep displacement, refers to the delay between when you decide to go to bed and when you actually attempt to fall asleep. While many of us rely on our phones to wind down—whether it's watching ASMR videos or catching up on messages—experts warn that this habit can lead to significant sleep issues.
Picture
Kate Bartel, a sleep researcher at Flinders University, explains that technology use before bed isn’t inherently bad, but it can become problematic when it leads to a delay in sleep. Engaging content can keep us awake longer than intended, and missing out on sleep has well-documented negative effects on our physical, mental, and emotional health.

Sleep is essential for everything our bodies do, from maintaining cognitive function to supporting cardiovascular health. The amount of sleep needed varies by individual, but consistently missing out can lead to poor memory, decreased concentration, and mood disturbances.

Interestingly, new research suggests that the blue light emitted by screens may not be as big of a culprit in sleep disruption as once thought. Instead, personality traits, age, and the type of content being consumed play more significant roles. For instance, someone who can easily put their phone down when tired might not be as affected by screen time before bed. However, adolescents, who often engage in activities like late-night gaming, are more likely to suffer from sleep displacement.

The way technology disrupts sleep during the night is another concern. Notifications can wake us up, and a quick glance at the phone can easily turn into an extended period of wakefulness.

Yet, tech in bed isn't all bad. Dr. Bartel notes that some people use calming apps or videos to help them relax, which can be beneficial, especially if the alternative is lying awake worrying. However, she suggests that learning other techniques for managing stress during the day could be more helpful in the long run.

To reduce sleep displacement due to technology, experts recommend setting a timer for phone use, choosing content that won’t keep you hooked, turning off notifications, or even placing your phone away from your bedside.

Woolies Scan and Go Tech

Forget long queues! Woolworths is changing the game with its new Scan&Go trolleys. Scan as you shop, pay with ease, and enjoy a faster checkout. It's shopping reinvented!

The next-step technology allows customers to scan products as they shop, providing a faster and more convenient checkout process.
Picture
Equipped with a smart screen, the trolley enables shoppers to tally their purchases and pay upon exiting the store. This eliminates the need for traditional checkout lines and empowers customers to manage their spending effectively.
How does it work in practice?
  1. Grab a Trolley: Locate a Scan&Go trolley in the designated area of the store.
  2. Unlock the Device: Insert your Everyday Rewards card into the trolley to unlock the attached tablet.
  3. Start Scanning: As you shop, scan the barcode of each item you place in your trolley using the tablet's built-in scanner. (no loose fruit and veg)
  4. Bag Your Groceries: Pack your groceries as you normally would while scanning.
  5. Checkout: When you've finished shopping, head to a self-serve checkout and complete your payment using the information on the trolley's tablet
A couple of thing jump out at me:
  • Loose fruit and veg without barcodes?
  • Bags if you need to buy them?
  • Can you take the trolley outside with this scanning table attached?
But hey this does sound pretty cool… while the technology is currently being piloted in a Sydney store, Woolworths plans to expand the initiative to additional locations nationwide. The company emphasises that the new system is designed to enhance the shopping experience and does not pose a threat to jobs.
As the retail industry continues to evolve, Woolworths' Scan&Go trolley represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to improve customer satisfaction and efficiency.

Listener Question - How Do I Tell if an App is Free?

17/8/2024

Q - I downloaded what I thought was a free app but it requires upfront payment.Problem is I didn’t know this going in. (in-app-purchases).

In my experience, an app called DanceFitme allows you to install for free and go through the onboarding process to start the first activity, but you cannot progress and actually start the activity without a payment via a subscription
Picture
A - That's a common strategy used by some app developers to give users a taste of their app's features and encourage them to subscribe for full access. While it can be frustrating to find that an app requires a subscription after you've already installed it, it's important to keep in mind that app developers need to generate revenue to continue supporting and improving their products.

To avoid this kind of surprise, you can:
Read the app's description carefully before installing it. Developers often mention if their app requires a subscription or in-app purchases.

Check user reviews, as they might mention any restrictions or limitations in the app.

Look for alternative apps that offer similar features without requiring a subscription or upfront payment.

Mind Control

Scientists Achieve Breakthrough in Mind Control

In a rather frightening experiment that blurs the lines between science fiction and reality, researchers in South Korea have successfully manipulated the behaviour of mice through remote brain stimulation.
Picture
Traditionally, mind control experiments have involved invasive procedures, tethering subjects to complex equipment and limiting their movement. However, researchers from the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) have developed a revolutionary approach. By introducing nanoparticle-activated "switches" into the brains of mice, they can now remotely manipulate behaviour using magnetic fields.

The technology, dubbed "Nano-MIND," allows scientists to precisely target and activate specific brain circuits.

By targeting specific brain regions associated with feeding, socialising, and maternal instincts, scientists were able to remotely control the mice's behaviour. The implications of this breakthrough are profound, with potential applications in treating neurological disorders and understanding the complexities of the human brain.

While the technology is still in its early stages, it raises important ethical questions about the potential for mind control and manipulation. As research progresses, it will be crucial to establish robust ethical guidelines to ensure responsible development and application of this powerful technology.

Can’t wait to see the app for that!

Inspired by successful trials in countries like Norway and Sweden, Australia is taking steps to explore the feasibility of wireless charging roads. The federal government has already invested $3 million in a project led by Swinburne University to develop this technology.

While challenges remain, including the high cost of infrastructure and the need for further technological advancements, the potential benefits are substantial. Wireless charging roads could reduce charging times, improve convenience for EV drivers, and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable transportation system.

As the world transitions to a low-carbon future, Australia has an opportunity to become a leader in electric vehicle technology and infrastructure. By investing in research and development, the country can pave the way for a future where electric vehicles are the norm.

Do you think wireless charging roads are the future of transportation?
I was thinking…
Beyond the core technology, there’s an intriguing opportunity to integrate additional services into this infrastructure. Imagine pulling into a wireless charging bay and not only replenishing your vehicle's battery but also treating it to a much-needed wash.

Car Wash and Charge Combo
Integrating car wash services into wireless charging stations could offer several benefits:
  • Increased revenue: Charging stations could generate additional income through car wash services.
  • Customer convenience: Drivers can combine essential tasks, saving time and effort.
  • Enhanced user experience: Providing a clean car along with a charged battery can improve overall customer satisfaction.

Of course, implementing such a concept would require careful planning and investment in infrastructure. However, the potential rewards are significant. By offering a comprehensive service that addresses both vehicle charging and maintenance needs, charging stations could become more attractive destinations for EV owners.
Forget just charging your car. The next generation of charging stations is set to become one-stop shops, offering everything from car washes to retail therapy. Get ready for a new era of electric vehicle infrastructure.
